Description
F. E. GILBERT. Charms and Similar Articles of Jewelry.
No. 225,821. Patented Mar. 23,1880.
NJETERB, PHOTD-LITHOGUFHER- WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK E. GILBERT, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
CHARM AND SIMILAR ARTICLES OF JEWELRY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,821, dated March 23, 1880. Application filed December 26, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK E. GILBERT, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oh arms and other Similar Articles of Jewelry, which improvement detached.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in a charm having a socket for receiving and inclosing a buttoner, the latter being constructed with a shank which fits nicely into or over the socket, and the loop of the buttoner is spread open at about the middle of its length to a distance slightly exceeding the diameter of the socket provided in the charm for its reception, so that in forcing the buttoner into its socket the loop is slightly compressed, and by its pressure against the sides of the socket it prevents the buttoner from dropping out accidentally.
In the drawings, the letter A designates a charm, which may be made in the form of a cross or in any other form suitable for a charm. In the body of this charm is formed a socket, to, which is preferably made circular in its cross section, but which may be made square, oval, or polygonal, or in any other form suitable for the purpose. With this socket is combined a buttoner, B, which consists of a head, I), a shank, c, and a buttoning-loop, d.
The head bis made of such a shape that when the buttoner is inserted into the socket to said head conforms to the configuration of the charm or imparts to the same an additional ornament, and by taking hold of this head the buttoner can be readily withdrawn for use. The shank c fits nicely into the socket a, and the loop (I is spread open at about the middle of its length to a distance which slightly exceeds the diameter of the socket a. If said loop, which is formed of elastic metal wire, is forced into the socket a, it is compressed, and, by its inherent tendency to recover its original shape, it presses against the inner walls of the socket and forms a lock to prevent the buttoner from dropping out accidentally.
The charm A may be suspended from a chain, or it may be provided with a suitable pin or other fastening, and worn as a breastpm.
By combining the buttoner with the charm in the manner above described the person wearing the charm has the buttoner always ready at hand, and when the buttoner is withdrawn it can be used with entire freedom.
It must be remarked that the shank c of the buttoner, instead of being made to fit interior of the socket a, may be so formed as to catch over the outside of the charm, and in this case the shank will have to be made to conform to the shape of the charm.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a charm, A, and its socket a, of a buttoner, B, provided with a head, I), shank 0, and locking-loop d, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 22d day of December, 1879.
FRANK E. GILBERT. [L. s} Witnesses: E. F. KAS'IENHUBER, W. HAUFF.
