EAR ORNAMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,708, dated January 20, 1903.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, ALBERT A. GEIGER and DANIEL (J. BAUER, citizens of the United States, and residents of Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, and JOSEF PEJOHAR, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ear Ornaments; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention has reference to improvements in jewelry; and the invention relates more particularly to a novel form and construction of ear ornament, the same producing a pendant and comprising a flexible ornamental chain adapted to be inserted through the ear-perforation, the said chain to be provided at one or both of its free ends with an ornament, such as a diamond or other precious gem or a pearl or some ornamental design in metal.

The invention has for its principal object to provide a simply-constructed and ornamental piece of jewelry to be worn by aperson in the ear in the manner of an ordinary ear-ring, but differing from the ear-ring of the ordinary and well-known construction by having one or more ornaments and a flexible chain, to'which said ornament or ornaments are attached, the said chain being capable of being passed through the perforation in the ear and whereby the ornaments dangle from the lobe of the ear in the manner of a pendant.

The invention therefore consists in the novel form and construction of ear ornament hereinafter more fully described; and, furthermore, this invention consists in the various novel arrangements and combinations of parts, all of which will be set forth in detail in the accompanying specification and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim, which are appended to and form a part of the said specification.

is a representation of the said ear ornament, but one of the ornaments at the one end of the chain being represented in cross-section and illustrating one means of detachably connecting the said ornament to a screwshank or inserting-pin at the end of'the chain. Fig. 4 is a view of the chain and one of its ornaments at the one end of the chain, with the other ornament entirely removed from the screw-shank or inserting-pin, with several of the links of the chain nearest said shank or pin represented as being rigidly connected to serve as a finger-piece to the said short shank or pin, whereby the same can be readily inserted through the perforation in the ear. Fig. 5 is a view of another ornament embodying the principles of the present invention, the chain in this case being provided with but one ornament at its one end, and the screw-shank at the other end of the chain being provided with an ordinary screw disk or nut, whereby the said ornament can'be suitably retained in the perforation of the lobe of the ear.

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the said above-described views to indicate corresponding parts.

In the said drawings the reference character 1 indicates the complete ornament, the same comprising a flexible chain 2, of any dosirable and suitable length, provided at its one end with any suitable ornament 3 in metal or a precious stone, as a diamond, pearl, or any other jewel or jewels, and provided at its opposite end with another ornament 4:, such as a hollow metal sphere or a pearl or any other suitable ornament.- The said ornament 4: in the present construction is indicated as a hollow sphere, and the same is detachably connected with the chain by having suitably secured thereto in an opening, as indicated in Fig. 3 or in any other suitable manner, a disk or plate 5, which is provided with a centrallyarranged screw threaded hole for the reception of a screw-shank or inserting-pin 6, as clearly illustrated in the said Fig. 3. The said screw-shank or insertingpin 6 is secured to the end link of the chain 2 in any suitable manner and preferably by having the said link arranged in an eye 7 in the said shank or pin, as shown. To permit of the passing of the said screw-shank or pin 6 into and entirely through the perforation in the lobe of the ear, and thereby arrange the chain in its suspended relation to the car, as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the ornament 4 is removed by unscrewing it from said shank or pin. The said shank or pin is then forced through the ear and the chain pulled through to hang in the position that best suits the wearer of the ornament, when the said ornament 4 is again screwed back upon the said screw-shank or pin 6 in the ornamental position indicated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 of the drawings. In order that the said screw-shank or inserting-pin 6 may be readily passed into and through the perforation in the lobe of the ear, it may be desirable to hard-solder or otherwise rigidly connect two or more of the links of the chain nearest the end of the shank or pin 6 to provide a rigid finger-piece S, as indicated in Fig. 8 of the drawings; but of course it will be understood that this is not an absolute necessity.

In Fig. 5 of the drawings we have represented a slight modification of the present invention. In this form of ear ornament the flexible chain 2 may be made shorter, and instead of an ornament 4 a screw disk or nut 9 may be screwed directly upon the screwshank or inserting-pin 6 to retain the ornament in its wearing position in the perforation of the ear against accidental displacement and loss.

WVe are fully aware that some changes may be made in the various arrangements and combinations of the parts without departing from the scope of the present invention. Hence we do not limit our invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the parts as described in the previous specification and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

Having thus described our invention, What we claim is 1. As a new article of manufacture, an ear ornament, comprising, a flexible chain adapted to be inserted in the perforation of the lobe of an ear, an ornament at one end of the said chain, a screw-shank at the opposite end of said chain, and means removably arranged upon the said screw-shank for retaining said chain in its wearing position in the ear, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. As a new article of manufacture, an ear ornament, comprising, a flexible chain adapted to be inserted in the perforation of the lobe of an ear, an ornament at one end of the said chain, a screw-shank at the opposite end of said chain, and a hollow ornament provided with a screw-threaded perforation into which the said screw-shank is screwed for retaining said chain in its wearing position in the ear, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. As a new article of manufacture, an ear ornament, comprising, a flexible chain, an ornament at one end of the chain, and the chain at its opposite end having several of its links rigidly connected, a screw-shank attached to said rigidly-connected links, and means removably arranged upon said screw-shank for retaining said chain in its wearing position in the ear, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. As a new article of manufacture, an ear ornament, comprising, a flexible chain, an ornament at one end of the chain, and the chain at the opposite end having several of its links rigidly connected, a screw-shank attached to said rigidly-connected links, and a hollow ornament provided with a screw-threaded perforation into which the said screw-shank is secured for retaining said chain in its wearing position in the ear, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
