UNETE STATES ATENT Errc.
LEoN P. JEANNE, on WOODSIDE, AND LOUIS 1 .JE NNE, OF GREENVILLE,
NEW JERSEY.
BREASTjPlN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,683, dated December 21, 1880.
Application filed October 14, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LEON P. JEANNE, of YVoodside, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, and LOUIS P. JEANNE, of Greenville,
5 county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Articles of Jewelry, of which the following is a specification.
1n the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 rep- IO resents a rear elevation of our improved article of jewelry shown arranged for use as a cross. Fig. 2 is a side view; Fig. 3, a horizontal section of the same on line 00, Fig. l and Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are respectively a top I view of a lace-pin and sectional side and front views of two ear-rings into which the cross is divided.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an article of jewelry that may be changed so as to be used for different purposes; and the invention consists of an article of jewelry made in the form of a cross, with detachable side 2 pieces, pin, and hanger, so that by removing the side pieces the middle piece can be used as a lace-pin and the side pieces as ear-rings, as will be more fully described hereinafter, and then be pointed out in the claims.
0 Referring to the drawings, A represents an article of jewelry which is made in the shape of across. This cross is arranged with ahanger, B, and pin B, so as to be worn in two different ways, either by being suspended from a 3 5 ribbon or band or by being applied by the pin, which last is a well-known feature in brooches and crosses. For the purpose, however, of using the article also, in a different manner, as a lace-pin and ear-rings, the shorter side pieces,
A, of the same are made separately detacha ble from the longer center piece, A This is accomplished by providing the side pieces, A, with short screw-studs c, which screw into sockets c of the center piece, A To render 5 the side pieces separately applicable for the other uses, it is necessary that the hanger B and pin B can be detached therefrom. They are for this purpose applied to a base-bar, B which is rigidly secured to the center piece and to one of the side pieces, respectively, by a screw-stud, b, at the end of the hinged hanger, and by a pin, 1), of the base-bar, which pin enters a socket-hole of one of the side pieces,
as shown in Fig.3. By unscrewingthe hanger the pin and supporting-bar can be removed and 5 5 the side pieces, A, then unscrewed from the main or center piece.
The center piece, A has a pintle-socket, d, at one end and a pin'socket or guard-hook, d, at the opposite end. Into the pintle-socket d a pin, 01 is inserted by a cross-pintle, and retained at the pointed end by the pin-socket, which is hinged so as to be thrown up into position at right angles to the center piece, A, as in Fig. 4, or to be folded down thereon to be out of the way, as shown in Fig. 2. The center piece is thus applied for use as a lace-pin.
The side pieces, A, are screwed into sockets e of separate puncture-bars e, as shown in Figs.
5 and 6, and can thus be worn as ear-rings, they forming, with the lace-pin, an elegant set, that may be changed back to a cross at any time by unscrewing the side pieces from the sockets of the puncture-bars,removing the pin (1 from the center piece, screwing the side pieces 7 5 into position thereon, and securing the pin and hanger across the back of the side pieces. The lower hinged pin socket or guard, 61, is then folded back on the center piece to be outof the way. The hanger fits into a central recess of the pintle-socket d, as shown in Fig. 1, so that it may be placed close to the center piece when the cross is secured by the pin.
The article is designed to be made up in gold and diamonds, or with other precious stones, and forms an elegant and useful article of jewelry for ladies.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patento 1. The combination, in an article of jewelry made in the form of a cross, of a center piece and detachable side pieces, the separate pieces being adapted'for use as a lace-pin and earrings, respectively, substantially as described. 5
2. The combination, in an article of jewelry made in the form of a cross, of a center piece and detachable side pieces with a detachable base-bar, to which a hanger and pin are applied, said base-bar being secured to the center and side pieces, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of the Center piece, A and side pieces, A, each having a socket-hole, with a detachable base-bar, BE, supportinghanger and pin, and with a screw-stud, b, of the hanger, and a fixed pin, 1), of the base-bar, substantially as specified.
4. The center piece, A having a fixed pintle-socket, d, at one end and a hinged pin socket or guard, d, at the opposite end, and adapted to apply a pin thereto for use separately as a lace-pin, substantially as specified.
5. The detachable side pieces, A, having screw-studs for application to sockets of the LEON P. JEANNE. LOUIS P. JEANNE.
Witnesses PAUL GoEPEL, 'ADoLF DENGLER.
