UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES PETTIBONE, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.l
HANDCUFF.
i SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 263,212, dated August 22, 1882.
' Application nfiled March 6, 1882, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES PETTIBONE, a citizen of the United States, and a res-ident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and 5 State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handcuffs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved handcuff. .It is designed for stage and mimic use.
[o The object is to have it resemble a shackle and to be easily locked and slipped onto the wrist and quickly released for scenic ei'ects.
It consists of a spring-yoke to encircle the Wrist, one end of which is hinged to a trans- 15 verse bar, and the other end being provided with a catch to connect with the hinged bar.
The accompanying drawing is a perspective view of my invention.
A represents the spring or yoke which enzo circles the wrist. v
D represents an eye, to which a chain is attached to secure the two cuffs togetherf Bv represents a bar, hinged at one end to one limb of the yoke A, C representing the z 5 hinge.
:c c represent one or more slots pierced in the bar B.
c represents a tapered lng or tongue entering one of the slots c.
3o I b represents a shoulder or catch on the outer side of the lug or tongue a.
The outwaid springot' the metal yoke A forces the catch or shoulder b outward on the under side of the bar B when the lug a is inserted in the slot c. The shackle is easily removed 35 by pressing the end of tongue a inward and backward to unloose the catch b, when the bar B will swing back and allow the ready removal of the cuff.
I do not desire to limit myself to the par- 4o ticular kind ot' catch which unites one of the limbs of yoke A to the hinged bar B, as the forni of` catch engagement may be variously modified.
This article is very simple, cheap, and effect 45 ive for the uses designed.
A handcui' consisting essentially of the spring-yoke A, hinged to bar B, which is provided with one or more slots, c, to engage with 5o a catch, b, on the opposite limb of the yoke A, substantially :is herein set forth.
In testimony whereof' I have hereunto set myhand in the. presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES PETTIBONE.
Witnesses:
JOHN E. J oNEs, HERBERT P. 000K.
