ATTOR] UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WERNER W. FIOHTENBERG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO W. C. PEE'I & CO., OF SAME PLACE.
SCARF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,815, dated March 23, 1880.
Application tiled December 31, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WERNER W. FICH'LEN- BERG, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Changeable Scarf, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved scarf which is simple in construction and can easily be changed, so that either end of the same may be attached to the neck-band.
The invention consists in a scarf having both ends alike and provided with a neck-band having its end fastened to a small plate which is pivoted to a button that is arranged to slide on a thin rod or a wire fastened to the rear side of the scarf.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front view of the scarf. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the wire, the sliding button, and the plate pivoted thereto.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
'Ihe two ends B and O of the scarfA are made alike, so that either will answer as the top of a bow. The respective ends ot' the scarf are provided with shields D and D on the rear side, and below the shields a wire, thin rod, or strip, E, of metal, hard rubber, whalebone, cane, or other suitable material, is fast ened to the rear side of the scarf. A small button, F, through which the rod E passes, slides up and down on the same, and a small metal plate, G, to which one end of the neckband H is fastened in some suitable manner, is pivoted to this butt-on F. Each shield is provided with a projecting pin, J, for fastening the loose end of the neck-band. The sliding button F may be replaced by a loop or similar device, to which the plate F may be pivoted. The wire E maybe replaced by two parallel wires carrying the sliding button between them.
The operation is as follows If the end B of the scarf A is to be the top of the same, the slidin g button F is pushed to the corresponding end of the rod or wire E, the neckband is passed through the space at K, between the shield D and the scarf', is then passed around d the neck of the wearerinto the space at L, between the shield and the scarf, and then secured on the projecting pin J, as shown. If the end C is to be the top of the scarf, the button F is pushed to the end of the rod 'or wire E corresponding to the shield D', the plateG is turned on its pivot, and the necleband is passed through the corresponding openings in the shield D in the same manner as described above, and as shown in dotted lilies.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. As an improved article ot' manufacture. a changeable scarf made substantially as herein shown and describechwith the neck-band attached to a plate pivoted to a button adapted to glide on a wire or thin rod attached to the scarf', as set forth.
2. In a scarf, the combination, with the wire E, of the sliding button F, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a scarf, the combination, with the neckband H, of the plate Gr and sliding button F, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
WERNER W. FIOHTENBERG.
