'1 ICKET BOOK Filed Dec. 8, 1938 NAM E ADDRESS CITY I 2 1 4 n PAYIQ CTfi 3nnentor attorney Patented Nov. 26, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 4 Claims.
This invention relates to ticket books and particularly books of tickets carrying indicia varying on the different tickets and concealed prior to extraction of the tickets from the book.
Such books are useful to religious, fraternal and charitable organizations for stir'nulating ticket sales, the concealed indicia being in some cases the price of admission to an'entertainment, and in others affording the purchaser a chance to win a special prize, in addition to purchased entertainment.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved means for so binding tickets in book form as to afford concealment of the aforesaid indicia in a quite simple, inexpensive, and highly effective manner. I
Another object is to so bind said tickets in book form that any selected ticket may be extracted without removing or loosening the remaining tickets.
These and various other objects are attained by the construction hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of the ticket book, in one form, with its front cover sheet raised and disclosing the top-most ticket-forming sheet.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a ticket extracted from said book.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the book with its front cover member removed, the remaining portion of the cover and the staples which serve to bind the book being sectionally shown.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modified ticket book.
Fig. 5 is a similar view with the front cover member raised to expose the top-most ticketforming sheet.
Fig. 6 is a view of a ticket extracted from the modified book.
Fig. 7 is a plan view of the modified book with its front cover member removed and showing in section the remaining portion of the cover and the staples which bind the book.
In these views, the reference character I designates a plurality of sheets of paper or thin cardboard, secured by clinched staples 2 and 2a. to and within a cover comprising front and back sheets 3 and 4, integrally interconnected as indicated at 5, in proximity to the upper margins of the sheets I. Each sheet I comprises a ticket 6 and a stub 1, meeting approximately midway of the length of the sheet in a line 8, extending the full height of the sheet, the latter being severed along the upper and lower portions of such line and perforated along the mid portion thereof, as
best appears in Fig. 3. Said upper severed portion is oblique to the remaining portion of the line 8, forming an angle of approximately fortyfive degrees with the upper margin of the sheet. Thus there is formed a triangular, lateral extension 9 from the upper portion of each ticket and the indicia It to be concealed is positioned on such extension in proximity to its oblique edge.
At the upper portion of its other lateral margin,
the ticket is severed from the sheet along aline 'II downwardly extending from the upper edge of the sheet in substantially the 'same oblique relation to such edge as the lateral margin of I the extension 9. Extending from the lower end of such line to the adjacent lateral margin of the sheet is a short horizontal line of perforations I2. The staples 2 and 2a are elongated along the two oblique severed lines, outside of the ticket area, so as to firmly secure the cover to the sheets I and the latter to each other. in proximity to said lines. Furthermore the staples arepreferably disposed in relatively close proximity to the lower extremities of said oblique lines. The staple 2 engages the stubs of the sheets I and the staple 2a engages relatively small stubs I2'a which are spaced and isolated from the stubs I by the tab-forming upper portions I2b of the tickets. The front sheet 3 of the cover is scored or otherwise marked to form a fold line I3, extending from end to end of such sheet, in close proximity to the staples 2 and 2a.
In use of the described book, any ticket may be readily extracted therefrom by first tearing along the perforations of the lines 8 and I2 and then pulling the ticket out from beneath the top portion of the cover sheet. Fig. 1 shows how the severed lower portion of the line 8 facilitates gripping the ticket in extracting the ticket as above described. It is apparent that the indicia I0 is positively concealed in the described book construction, since the staples jointly prohibit folding the cover in any closer proximity to said indicia than the fold line I3. Also the oblique relation of the staple 2 to the sheet and disposal of the indicia In on a tab extending above such staple prevents the indicia from being read by buckling up the cover between the two staples.
The modification shown in Figs. 4, 5, 6, and '7 differs from the construction already described in that the staples I4 and I5 are elongated along the fold line It ofthe front cover member, to which line they are adjacent. The staple I5 is disposed substantially midway between the lateral margins of the tickets I'I. Each ticket is severed from the corresponding sheet IS on lines I3 downwardly extending from the top edge of such sheet adjacent to theends of the staple l5. A line of being severed along the end portions of such line 1 l and perforated along the mid portion thereof. Between the two staples a tab 23 is formed'on the ticket and the upper end of this tab carries the indicia 24. I
To extract a ticket from this modified book, the
" corresponding sheet is torn along the perforations of the line 22 and is then further torn along-the perforations 2B. A downward pull exerted on the ticket then readily withdraws it from the bookij The cover being held down at each side of and in close proximity to the tab 23, it is evident that .staples are inexpensive and easily applied.
The invention is presented as including all such modifications and changes as come withinthe scope of the following claims.
What I claim is:
1. A ticket book comprising a plurality of sheets superposed one on another and each comprising a ticket portion, and-*twostub portions differing in size, and being weakened along the juncture line of the larger stub portion and. the ticket portion to facilitate removal of the ticket portion, front and. back cover members between which said sheets are disposed, a memberinterconnecting said cover members and extending over the back edge of the book, and fasteners extended through the cover members and sheets in relatively close proximity to corresponding margins of said sheets, said juncture lines extending entirely across the sheets from said margins thereof, and the ticket portions being individually 5 formed with tabs extending outwardly to said margins, and carrying indicia required to be concealed prior to extraction of the ticket portions from the book, such tabs being defined at corresponding edges thereof by said juncture lines, and being interposed between the large and small stub portions, the sheets being weakened at the juncture lines of said tabs and the smaller stub portions to further facilitate removal of the ticket tions adjacent to the inner ends of said tabs and the other engaging the small stub portion adjacent to the inner ends of the tabs, whereby the front cover member and the interconnection. between the two cover members are secured in a proximity to the tabs such as to conceal said indicia.
1 2. A ticket book as set forth in claim 1, the tabs being formed with lateral extensions to receive said indicia, such extensions engaging between said margins of the sheets and the fasteners which engage the larger stub portions.
3. A ticket book as set forth in claim 1, the juncture lines at opposite edges of the tabs being so oblique to said margins of the sheets as to form triangular lateral extensions on said tabs engaging between said margins and said fasteners engaging the larger stub portions.
4. A ticket book as set forth in claim 1, the juncture lines between the ticket portions and the smaller stub portions being U-shaped, and the sheets being severed along said lines at opposite sides of the small stub portions and. perforated marginal to the inner ends of the small stub portions.
