WILLIAM H. ROANE, OF PINE BLUFF, ARKANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BALE-TIES Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 220,869, September 10, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. ROANE, of Pine Bluff, in the county of Jefferson and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and Improved Bale-Tie, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to furnish a strong and simply-constructed cotton-bale tie, wherein the end of the band last fastened is brought to the outside of the fastener, instead of underneath.
It consists of' a rectangular plate, having opposite edges bent over toward the outside, forming flanges or lips, through one of which is made a transverse rectangular slot in line with the outside of the plate, while the other is provided with a similar slot, and with an opening through from the edge of the lip or flange, the same being adapted to operate in the manner fully described farther on.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front View of my improved fastener with the ends of the band secured thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, on line w (r of Fig. l 5 and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the fastener.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A is a rectangular metal plate, having opposite edges bent up and over toward the outside thereof, formiu lips or flanges B B. Through the bend of lip B is made a transverse rectangular slot, a, the lower side whereof aligns with the outer surface of the plate, as more clearly shown in Fig. 2. Through lip B is made another and similarly-situated slot, b, and from this slot an opening, c,extends through the lip, parallel to the straight sides of the plate, and of less width than the length of the slot b, so that a portion of the upper side of the said slot is of opening 0, as at d d.
dated October 21, 1879; application filed O is the band. The fixed end d is passed through slot a, along the outside surface of the plate under lip B, thence through slot 12 from here it is turned up against the back of the plate, and made to retain a position parallel to the plate and to the band, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
When the bale is banded, the free end (2 of the band is passed up through slot b, along band C, under lip B, thence through slot c; from here it is bent back over lip B and carried down parallel to the plate and band to lip B one edge is now slipped through opening 0 into slot 1), far enough to permit the opposite edge to be passed through the opening into the slot; the end is then adjusted so as to bear equally against the two parts d d of the upper side of slot 0, and the bale is tied.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. As an improvement in bale-ties, the plate A, having its opposite edges turned up and over to form lips B B, transverse slots a b, respectively, and provided with an opening, 0, in lip B, leading into slot 11 for the passage of the free end of the band, substantially as hereinbefore described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The within-described bale-tie, consisting in the plate A, with outwardly-turned lips B B on opposite ends, and having slots a b through the said lips B B, respectively, and an opening, 0, in lip B leading into slot b, to admit the free end of the band into slot 1), in combination with the band 0, arranged substantially as described.
WILLIAM H. ROANE.
