NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MORITZ EINSTEIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN HATS AND CAPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 214,898, dated April 29, 1879; application led March 19, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORITZ EINSTEIN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hats and Gaps, which invention is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of a hat containing my invention, the cape being folded. Fig. 2 is a similar section thereof when the cape is unfolded.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to the attachment of capes, for protecting the ears and neck, to hats and caps; and consists in the combination, with a hat or cap, of a tip, which is attached to the article on its rear part only, leaving the front part thereof loose or detached, and an ear and neck protecting cape fastened to the loose or detached portion of the tip, whereby the cape is adapted to be folded within the front part of the hat or cap, and to depend from the rear part, adapting itself, in either position, to the contour of the article.
In the drawings, the letter A designates the body of a hat, in which is fastened a cape, B, by means of a tip, C, according to my invention. The rear half or part of the tip C is stitched or otherwise attached to the lining of the hat A, While the front part thereof is left loose or detached, and to the last-named part thereof is fastened the cape B, sewing being usually adopted as a means of fastening.
The cape B is made of suitable size and shape to cover the ears and neck, and it is,
preferably, provided with e ehm-bend, d, for
holding the same in position when worn.
When the cape B is not in use the tip G is spread out and the cape is folded upon itself within the front part of the hat, as shown in Fig. 1, while, when the cape is to be used, the same is unfolded, and the loose portion of the tip is folded over toward the rear of the hat and adjusted upon the fixed part thereof', as shown in Fig. 2, the cape being thus allowed to depend from the hat on its rear part.
It will be perceived that in either position of the cape B the same conforms to the shape of the hat A, and hence it does not detract from the comfort or good appearance of the article.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a hat or cap, of a tip, which is attached to the article on its rear part only, leaving the front part thereof loose or detached, anda cape, for protecting the ears and neck, fastened to the loose or detached part of the tip, whereby the cape is adapted to be folded within the front part of the hat or cap and to depend from its rear part, adapting itself in either case to the contour of the article, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof' I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 12th day of March, A. D, 1879.
MORITZ EINSTEIN.
