To @ZZ whom z'fmcLg/fconcem':
Be it known that I, ISAAC Gr. STRAUss,a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State ,ofr l/Visconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Knitted Caps, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying, drawings. which are a part of this specification. This invention relates to improvements in knitted caps and particularly to caps of this type which are provided with a flap de-y signed to protectthe ears and neck of the wearer. j
Specilically the invention vconsists in av knitted cap so formed as to provide a band portion around thelower edge ofthe cap, one section of this band portion being foldable to a position where it acts as a protection for the ears and neck of the wearer, this section of the band, in its inoperative position being secured in a position folded against the body of the cap so as to complete the appearance of the complete band around the bottom of the cap.
The invention also consists in the novel construction and manner of forming the cap as will be made more apparent in the accompanying specification and drawings.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the cap,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the saine,
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the cap, and,
Fig. 4 is a view of the cap with'the pro- Ieferring now more particularly to the drawings it will be seen that `the lcap comprises two body sections 1() and 11 of tubular construction, joined together by a seam 12 which extends transversely of the cap, instead of from front to rear as s usual in caps of the ordinary' construction. The front portion 11 of the cap is formed with a band 13 which band is formed by folding a portion of the body backwardly upon itself as clearly shown in Fig.l 4. The rear portion of the cap 10 is provided with an adjustable band 14 also formed integrally with the body portion 10 and adapted in one position to be folded up upon the body portion 10 and secured in place by buttons 15 carried by the band portion of the other cap section.
Secured to the inner side of the band 14 is a iap 16 secured to the band 14 by stitching 17. The other end is attached to the the ears and neck of the wearer andin to the buttony 18- attheopposite end of kthe band. j This securely 'holds the;band portion-14 againstthe ears and neck; of `the flap by a button and button-holeconnection"` y 18. lWhen the adjustable band 1,4 vis in its extended position it acts asa protection for wearer and providesA protection from ther elements.
In knitting `the cap a portion thereof is-v knitted with what is called a cuff stitch` thereby forming a circumferential, rela? vportion 19..` Thev edges tively Y thinner of the lbands 13 and 14' are also knitted with theV c u stitch, these sections being indicated by thereference .characterA Q0. By forming the circumferential vband of a relatively thinner 'portionl the Afold-- The balance of the so' i wooly inner surface. From lthe foregoing Y it will be obvious that in accordance with this present invention there is provided a cap capable of lbeing worn in the ordinary manner or with ythe adjustable band 14 eX- tended so as to take the placeof ear -mutfs and muffler. vIt will be furthermore obvij ous that the construction of the cap is such that when the adjustable band is folded up against the body portion of the cap that the cap will have an ornate and stylish vappearance. 4
scribed and illustrated has been found to be desirable in every respect, this invention is not necessarily limited to this specific arrangement of. parts and thel manner of manufacturing, but reservation is 'made to lmake such changes and modifications as may come within the purview `of the accomsection being provided with an integral `comprising a body` While the specific arrangement herein de-i band portion, one of said band portions l being xed. and `the other being' adjustable to an extended position for covering' the ears and neck of the wearer, and means` for Securing` said adjustable-band portionfin its extended position.
2. A knitted cap of the class described* comprising front and rear sections secured together by a seam extendingI transversely of the cap, each cap section beingprovlded with'l af bandA portion normally folded' againstI said body portion, one 'of -said band portions being fixed! and', the y other being adjustableto an extendedl position forV prot'eeting-thef'neek and ears of the wearer,y
meansfor 'holding said adjustable band portion inv its folded position, anda flap perinanen-tly connected at one end to oneend-Vportion-ofthe` band and detachably conneetable atvits other endtothe opposite end of said band.` l
3. In a knitted cap of the class described,
aqbody: formed of i'ront and rea-r sections joined' together by a sea-rn extending,` transother oii said?. sections being untoldabl'e to versely of the cap, a. band portion-extending'- around the lower edge of said cap, saidbandf portion being` formed insectionaone ofsaid band' sections beingtixed and the an extended posit-ion, means for securing said foldable band section in its upper position, and an independent flap carried by said foldable band section and adapted to encircle the neck of the wearer to hold said band.' portion in engagement with the ears and neck of the wearer.
4. ln a cap, twol knitted body sections joined together by a seam extending' trans`v versely of the cap, integral lnittecll and portion, and an independent iap ofless width. thanthe band carried on the inside of said bandsection an adapted to pass around the neck of the wearer and to be connected' toA the opposite end oi the band for holdin-g` said band section against the ears and' neck.
oft the wearer.
ln' testimony whereof, l' aflix mysignature.`
