Description

F. M, PIPER. Pin and Needle Case. No. 214,003.
Patented April 8,1879.
[by If I fnventor.
Fi i
FRANCIS M. PIPER, or WALPOLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT lN PIN AND NEEDLE CASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No 214,003, dated April 8, 1879; application filed August 12, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS M. PIPER, of Walpole, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Device for Carrying Pins, Needles, Thread, Buttons, 850., which I call A Useful Companion, and of which the following is a specification: I
The invention relates to a receptacle for pins, needles, thread, buttons, 85c.
Heretofore there have been devices for carrying needles and pins in combination; but to the best of my knowledge and belief there has never been a device for carrying in convenient form for the pocket the combination of needles,
thread, pins, silk, buttons, 85c.
The object of my invention is to provide a suitable receptacle for the above-mentioned articles which may be conveniently carried upon the person. i
The invention consists of a pair of bookcovers, between which is placed a shallow box, with a lid, containing spools for thread and silk, and space for but-tons. Between the boxlid and book-cover is a woolen leaf for needles, and elastic for holding a paper of needles and a key. r
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters indicate like parts, Figure l is a view of the case as open, .the lid D being shown as closed or down upon the box B. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the case, the lid D being shown as thrown back, so as to enable the spools, 850., to be seen. Fig. 3 shows the case as closed. Fig. 4. is an edge elevation of the same. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of the box B, with the spools, frame, &c. Fig. 6 is an end view of the case.
Between the covers A and A, and secured to A, is placed the box B, with lid D within the box B, and fastened to its bottom is the frame E, eontainin g the spools F, also the partitions in the corners of box B, forming the receptacles G for buttons, 85c. Between the lid D and the cover A is the Woolen leaf 0. On the inside of said cover is the elastic braid b, secured at each end and once between ends to the said cover A, thereby forming receptacles for the paper of needles H and the key I, as shown in Fig. 1.
The leaf 0 is fastened to the lid "D, and is intended for the reception of needles when taken from paper H, as shown in Fig. 1.
The lid D is made of two thicknesses of pasteboard, bound on the edges with silk or other suitable material, and is hinged to the box B with thesame material, the ends of the lid D being used for thereception of pins, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 6, the pins passin g between the two thicknesses of pasteboard.
The slotted frame E is designed as a support for the spools F, the journals of said spools having a bearing at either end in said frame.
The spools are made with a journal at either end, the journal uppermost having a square perforation longitudinally, to receive the key used in turning the spools to wind the thread upon them, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5, the spools revolving in frame E.
The spaces occurring in the corners of box B are utilized as receptacles, G, for buttons, &c., by passing diagonally across the corners a partition, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5.
The edge of box B longitudinally is perforated, as shown in Fig. 4, by letter K, to allow of the passage of the thread from spools F when the lid D is closed to box 13.
The covers A are made in the same form of ordinary book-covers, and of any suitable material.
The keyI has a squared point, with a shoulder to fit the perforation in the journal of spools F. A
What I claim is The box B, with the lid D, button-receptacles G, and thread perforations K, in combination with the frame E and spools F, sub stantially as described and set forth.
FRANCIS M. PIPER.
Witnesses Mrs. MARY M. PIPER, J. H. ENRINS.
