Description

NOV. 29, 1938.' J, v CAVALERO 2,138,443
BOOK
Filed NOV. 2, 1937 1NVENTOR JOHN v. CAVALERO;
Paul ATM.
AITORNEY.
Patented Nov. 29, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
My invention relates to books as an article of manufacture and more particularly to books such as are used for religious purposes, small prayer books, etc., and has among its objects to provide:
A neat cover pocket in a book.
A book cover having a pocket for prayer beads and means for securing a crucifix on the exterior of the pocket.
A novel book cover construction.
An improvement in the binding of prayer books.
A cover for prayer books in which a receptical or pocket is provided having an opening near the top of the cover for inserting prayer beads.
A concave inner surface of a book cover and an apertured inner cover forming a pocket between the inner and outer cover.
I accomplish these and other objects by the construction herein described and shown in the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my book.
Fig. 2 is a section at 2-2 Figure 3.
Fig. 3 is a section at 3 3 Figure 2.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary detail.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary detail of a modification.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the accompanying drawing and in the specication to follow.
Leather and fabric covers and receivers for prayer books have become common with pockets for prayer beads and usually the crucifix is not seen without removing the beads from their pocket.
My prayer book needs no additional cover or container and the crucifix is at once seen dis played in a beautiful setting upon opening the book adding to the usefulness of the prayer book and rosary not only for adults but particularly for the child and the very compact prayer book children like best.
My book comprises the pages I bound in the usual manner and provides the front binding leaf 2 and back binding leaf 3 which secure the pages to the front cover 4 and back cover 5.
One of the covers, in this description, the front cover is constructed to form the pocket 6 having as one of its sides the apertured inner cover piece 'i in which I have provided the aperture 3 arranged near the top of the cover and used to facilitate the insertion of prayer beads 9 into the pocket.
Below the aperture and on the inner cover piece i and preferably depressed by embossing and below the general plan of the face of the inner cover, I have provided the cruciform indenture IU which is bordered by a crucigerous pattern to enhance the beauty of the setting for the crucifix I when secured in its normal position on the inner face of the cover which may be accomplished by the band Il passing over a part of the crucifix which may be inserted between the raised band II and the inner cover piece 'I of which the band is formed by the upper and lower slits I2 and I3 in said cover piece l.
The cover is stiifened by the dished member I4 of cardboard, metal or other relatively stiff material secured within the outer cover I to present a curved convex surface I6 on the outside of the cover and a concave inner surface I'I for the pocket 6.
The inner surface IT is lined and nished with the lining I8. The inside edges of the pocket are bordered by the frame I9 which lls the space surrounding the pocket between the inner cover and member I4 and is more firmly held in place by being clinched under the turned over edges 2B of said member or secured by adhesion or other means.
The outer cover I5 and the binding leaves v2 and 3 may also be carried beyond the edge 2I of the turned over edges 20 of the stiff member I4 and turned under and held under the turned over edges 20 and likewise the inner cover piece 'I may be also held under the turned over edges 2D as may be seen by referring to the drawing, Fig. 5.
The back cover 5 is constructed similar to the front cover except that in the place of the pocket the frame I9 is substituted for a filling piece 22. Of course a pocket may be provided in both covers for some uses such as for money or contributions and in some cases it may be desired to have a pocket in the back cover and not in the front cover.
l I have herein described in detail a simplified construction of my books. I do not wish to be limited to the detailed construction as I may wish to modify the construction to suit the uses to which my book may be adapted within the scope of the appended claims which set forth my invention.
I claim:
1. In a book, a concave convex member, an outer cover over the convex surface of said member, a frame secured to said member, a lining covering the concave surface of said member, and an apertured inner cover held away from said lining by said frame and forming a pocket between said lining and said inner cover, means securing said cover and member to said book whereby a crucifix and prayer beads secured to said crucix may be held within said pocket, and means on the outside of the pocket on the face of said inner cover securing said cruoix thereto.
2. In a book, a concave convex member, an outer cover over the convex surface of said member, a frame secured to said member, a lining covering the concave surface of said member, an apertured inner cover held away from said lining by said frame and forming. a pocket between said lining and said inner cover, and means securing said cover and member to said book, said inner cover having an indenture and securing means below said aperture whereby a crucifix may be kept :insaid indenture and prayer beads secured to said crucifix may be kept in said pocket.
3. In a book, a concave convex member, an outer cover over the convex surface of said member, a frame secured to said member, an apertured inner cover held away from said member by said frame and forming a pocket between said member and said inner cover, and means securing said cover and member to said book, said inner cover having an aperture and an indenture below said aperture, wherebyacrucix may be held in said indenture and means securing said crucix in said indenture whereby prayer beads secured to said crucifix may be placed in said pocket while said crucifix is secured on the coutside of said inner cover.
