This invention relates to improvements in message devices. It is an object of the invention to provide a message device comprising a frame, a message pad so mounted therein that its outer sheet is both accessible'for writing on and also readily removable, and a pocketform'edbetween the wall to which the frame is attached and the latter to receive one or more sheets which have been written on and removed from the pad.

Another object of the invention is to provide such a message device wherein the frame is cheaply and simply made out of a single stamping, and wherein a portion of the metal removed to form the mouth of the pocket is flexed inl5 wardly to form a shelf to support the base of the pad. 1

A further object of the invention is to provide such a message device wherein spring means are provided behind the pad to retain the marginal portions of the front sheet thereon in contact with the inner side of the frame and hold the pad substantially rigid while it is being written on.

Having thus briefiy and broadly stated some of the major objects and advantages of the invention I will now proceed to describe it in detail with the aid of the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 1 illustrates a front elevation of the invention, and

.Figure 2 is a section on the line 22 of Figure 1..

Referring to the drawing, l designates a stamped metal frame haing fiat upper and lower 5 extremities 2 and 3 adapted to rest against a vertical wall 4. These extremities are provided with suitable openings 5, which in the present instance are in the form of open ended slots, for the passage of suitable fastening means such as the screws 6, to hold these extremities against the said wall.

Intermediately of its height the frame is substantially U-shaped, and has a front portion 1 spaced from the wall 4; and lateral margins of 5 the said front portion are folded rearwardly to form side portions 8, the rear edge faces of which are in alignment with the rear faces of the upper and lower extremities 2 and 3.

Formed through the front portion 1 is a pad opening 9, and spaced beneath it is a pocket mouth Hi. In the formation of the latter a part of the front portion, after being cut, is inwardly and upwardly folded to form a horizontal shelf II to support a pad of paper 12. Arranged behind the latter are spring means, such as the two leaf springs l5, which are preferably frictionally held between the upper extremity 2 and the wall 4. These springs l5 hold the pad forwardly so that the marginal portions of the front sheet thereon remain in contact with the inner face of the frame i around the pad opening 9. They also support the pad while it is being Written on.

Centrally of the upper margin of the pad opening 9 a recess [6 is provided which extends above the top of the pad to facilitate the removal of the top sheet therefrom; and for the same reason the upper lateral margins of the pad opening 9 are outwardly and upwardly extended as shown at 9a beyond the top corners of the pad.

After a sheet has been written on and removed from the pad I2 it is deposited through the mouth l0 into the pocket H which is defined beneath the shelf l I between the frame I and the wall 4. Illa denotes a recess formed in the lower margin of the mouth [0 to facilitate the removal of messages from the pocket I! by the person for whom they are intended.

While in the foregoing the preferred embodiment of the invention has been described and shown, it is understood that the construction is susceptible to such alterations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A message device comprising a frame having two flat opposite extremities adapted to be secured to a wall, and an intermediate portion of substantially U-shaped section the lateral margins of which have their rear edge faces in alignment with the rear faces of said extremities, the front of the intermediate portion having two spaced openings therethrough, and a shelf carried by the frame and extending inwardly beneath one aperture adapted to support a pad of paper in combination with spring means adapted r to support the marginal portions of the front of the pad against the inner side of the frame around one opening, and the other opening forming the inlet to a pocket defined by the sides of the frame and the wall.

2. A message device comprising a frame having two flat opposite extremities adapted to be secured to a wall, and an intermediate portion of substantially U-shaped section the lateral margins of which have their rear edge faces in alignment with the rear faces of said extremities, the front of the intermediate portion having two spaced openings therethrough one beneath the other, and a shelf carried by the frame and extending inwardly beneath the upper opening to support a pad of paper, in combination with spring means adapted to hold the marginal portions of the front of the pad against the inner side of the frame around said upper opening, and the other opening forming an inlet to a pocket formed beneath the shelf between the intermediate portion of the frame and the wall.

A message device comprising a frame'having fiat opposite extremities adapted to be secured to a vertical wall, and an intermediate portion of substantially U-shaped section the sides of which have their rear edge faces in alignment with the inner faces of said extremities, the front of the intermediate portion having a pad opening and a pocket mouth formed therethrough which are spaced from one another, a shelf integral with the frame and projecting inwardly from the upper margin of the pocket mouth to support a pad of paper, spring means adapted to be supported be- 3, tween one extremity of the frame and the wall tending to hold the front of the pad against the marginal portion of the frame around the pad opening, and a pocket defined between the frame and the wall beneath said shelf into which said mouth opens.

4. As a new article of manufacture, a message device comprising a stamped frame having flat upper and lower extremities for attachment to a vertical wall, and a substantially U-shaped intermediate portion the sides of which extend rearwardly to said wall, a shelf formed integral with the frame to support a pad of paper, said frame having two spaced apertures therethrough one above and one beneath said shelf, the paper being accessible through the upper aperture, the lower aperture forming an inlet into a pocket defined beneath the shelf between the wall and the frame, and spring means adapted to be mounted between the frame and the Wall holding the pad margins against the inner face of the frame around the upper aperture.

5. A message device comprising the combina: tion set forth in claim 1, wherein the spring means consists of leaf springs supported between one flat extremity of the frame and the wall and adapted to extend behind said pad.

6. A message device of the character comprising the combination set forth in claim 1, wherein the upper corners of the frame opening and the upper margin of the said frame opening intermediately of its length are all outwardly extended whereby the removal of .a sheet from the pad is facilitated.
