PATENT OFFICE COMBINED HAT AND HANDBAG Edith 'F. Alexander, Havertord, Pa. Application February 13,1937, Serial No. 125,618
5 Claims.
This invention relates to hat and hand-bag combinations, that is to say, to articles of apparel of a type adaptable for use either as hats or as hand-bags.
My invention has for its vision of an article of the sort referred to which is easily and quickly convertible from one condition of use to the other; which, in either arrangement, is neat and highly attractive in appearance; and which, withal, can be produced at relatively small cost.
Other objects and attendant advantages will appear from the following detailed description of the attached drawing, whereof Fig. I is a view showing the combination device of my invention arranged as a hat and illustrating the manner in which the same is intended to be worn.
Fig. II is a view showing the device arranged as a hand bag.
Fig. III is a view similar to Fig. II with the bag opened.
Fig. IV is a view showing dle or sling is formed with the aid of interengageable means provided on the bag for the purpose;
and
Fig. V shows how the bag can be conveniently carried in suspension from one arm.
From Fig. II of these illustrations, it will be observed that the combination hat and handbag of my invention has the form of a pouch l, which may be of any suitable textile material such as silk, plush, or velvet, and which, in this instance, is of substantially sem -circular configuration with a straight mouth extending'crosswise of its top. The pouch I may have a lining 2 of the same material as the exterior: or of other material contrasting either in color or texture as may be desired. As a closure means for thepouch, I prefer to employ a slide fastener of wellknown construction whereof the tapes 3 and 4 carrying the interlocking lugs are suitably secured along the opposite side edges of the pouch mouth, the slide member of the fastener being indicated at 5 in Figs. II and III. The tapes and lugs permit the pouch mouth to bend around the head when open, as well asto bend freely when closed. For carrying the pouch when used as a handbag, means are provided for connecting the pouch walls across the mouth and forming a sling, yet leaving the mouth free to open when the connecting means are disconnected. As here illustrated, the connection extends between the ends of the bag mouth, and is so short that these ends bend upward (as permitted by upward flexure of the mouth) to form a carrier loop or sling,
chief aim, the prohow a carrying han- Fig. IV, results in the formation of a sling 8,
whereby the bag can be carried in the hand or suspended from the arm, as exemplified in Fig. V. To convert the device for service as a hat, the pouch I is first opened as shown in Fig. III by retracting the slide 5, and an edge margin of suitable width around its mouth is retroverted outwardly to provide a crown band 9 (Fig. I) faced by the lining material 2, with the lugs of the slide fastener appearing as an ornamental top edging III for the crown band and with the button 6 serving as an embellishment at the front of .the hat, the slide 5 and the loop I being incidentally tucked within the fold at the back of the hat and thus concealed.
Obviously, if desired, the pouch may be shaped k otherwise than herein shown by way of example, and after being opened it may be used as a hat without marginal folding as above, in which case the lugs of the slide fastener will appear as an ornamentation around the lower edge of the hat.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that I have provided an article of apparel capable of being produced at small expense, susceptible of conversion from one condition of use to the other easily and quickly, and presenting a highly attractive appearance both as a hat and as a bag.
It is to be understood that my invention is not necessarily limited to the use of a button and a loop as a means for forming a carrier sling, since other types of interengageable elements may obviously be substituted within the scope of the appended claims.
- Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A combination hat and handbag in the form of a pouch with across-wise mouth, said pouch being of a size to fit over the crown of the head when used for a hat; complemental slide fastener lugs secured along the opposite side edges of the mouth, and a fastener slide cooperating with said lugs in closing the pouch, said lugs permitting the mouth to bend around the head when open; and means for connecting the pouch walls across the mouth and forming a sling for carrying the pouch when used as a handbag, yet leaving the mouth free to open when disconnected.
2. A combination hat and handbag in the form of a pouch with a crosswise mouth, saidpouch being of a size to fi t over the crown of the head when used for a hat,'and having means for holding its mouth shut while permitting said mouth to bend upward; and fastening devices at opposite ends of the pouch mouth for connecting the ends of the bent up mouth together as a carrier sling when the pouch is used for a handbag.
3. A combination hat and handbag in the form of a pouch with a crosswise mouth, said pouch being of a size to fit over the crown of the head when used for a hat; complemental slide fastener lugs secured along the opposite side edges of the mouth, and a fastener slide cooperating with said lugs in closing the pouch, said lugs permitting the mouth to bend upward when shut; and fastening devices at opposite ends of the pouch mouth for connecting the ends of the bent up mouth together as a carrier sling when the pouch is used for a handbag.
4. A combination hat and handbag according to claim 3, wherein the pouch is proportioned as to depth to permit outward retroversion of a marginal portion of its mouth for the purposes of a crown band, with the fastener lugs apparent as an ornamental edging along the top of said band, when the pouch is used for a hat.
5. A combination hat and handbag in the form I of a. pouch with a. crosswise mouth, said pouch being of a size to fit over the crown of the head when used for a hat; complemental slide fastener lugs secured along the opposite side edges of the mouth, and a fastener slide cooperating with said lugs in closing the pouch, said lugs permitting the mouth to bend upward when shut; a buttonlike member at one end of the mouth constituting a front ornament when the pouch is used for a hat; anda loop at the other end of the mouth engageable with said member to connect the ends of the bent up mouth together as a carrier sling when the pouch is used for a handbag.
