3 Claims. (Cl. 2.196)
This inventionlrelates to wearing apparel'and, more particularly, to an accessory therefor.
Various types of rain garments have been provided which are conveniently foldable into a very small area and which may be conveniently carried in a carrying pouch, handbag, or the like.- However, such garments and protective pouches'are sometimes inconvenient to carry as a'separate unit, or are too bulky to place within small purses or pockets. In addition, the pouches within which many of these garments are ordinarily stored must be stored when the garment is worn, such often being an additional inconvenience. It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a combined carrying case and hat for rain garments that is extremely simple in construction, attractive in appearance, and which will overcome the aforementioned difiiculties.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a carrying case which is readily convertible,,when empty, into a protective and attractive hat.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a carrying case for carrying bulky articles of clothing which has, a self contained carrying handle and which can be conveniently used as an arm rest or pillow with the garment safely encased therewithin.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a combined carrying case, hat, and pillow of the type described which can be manufactured in large quantities at a relatively low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent from a 7 study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a device made in accordance with the present invention in use as a carrying case for a garment; 7
FIGURE 2 is a rear elevational view of the device shown in FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is an enlarged longitudinal cross sectional view taken along line 3-3 of FIGURE 2; 1
FIGURE 4 is a perspective view of the device shown in FIGURE 1 in use as an arm rest;
FIGURE 5 is a view similar to FIGURE 4, showing the device in use as a head rest or pillow;
FIGURE 6 is a perspective view ofv the device shown in FIGURES 1 to ,3 withtthegarment partially removed therefrom;
FIGURE 7 is a perspective view of the garment and carrying case shown in FIGURE 6 in operative use as a raincoat and rain hat upon a person; and
FIGURE 8 is a longitudinal cross sectional view taken along line 8-8 of FIGURE 7, showing the manner in which the converted carrying case is worn as a hat upon the head of the person.
Referring now to the drawing, and more particularly to FIGURES 1 to 3 thereof, a combined carrying case and hat 10 made in accordance with the present invention is shown to include a first panel 12 and a second panel 13 of substantially the same size and shape, both 'of which are preferably ofoval configuration. The periph-- eral edges of these panels 12, 13 are secured together, such as by stitches 15 to define a central storage comtached to the periphery of the panels in the manner shown 3,011,173 Patented Dem 5, 1961 "ice in FIGURES 1 and 2, such as by stitches 18. The greater part of the binding 17 is secured to a greater part of the periphery of the connected-panels, while a lesserpart of the binding is in free spaced relationship with the panels to define acarrying loop handle 20, through which the amid the person will-be extended so as to conveniently support the .unit upon the arm. I
As is-clearly shown in FIGURE 2 of the drawing, one of the panels 13 has portions defining a longitudinal opening 22 that is laterally spaced to one side of and parallelto the longitudinal central axis of thepanel. This opening 22 provides access to the interior of the compartment 25, within which a folded garment 26 may be stored, and which is normally closedby means of a suitable fastener, such as a 'slidefastener-24.
While the panels 12, 13 and binding 17 is preferably constructed of plastic sheeting material, it will be recognized that other types of material, such as fabrics and the like, may be substituted therefor. Similarly, while the parts have been described as being fastened together, by stitches 15, 18, other types of securing means may be used, such as by welding, or the like. In the same respect, other types of fasteners may be substituted for the slide fastener 24, such as snap fasteners or spiral closures. I
With the garments 26 folded and stored within the compartment 25 of the unit, it may be conveniently carried by means of the loop handle 20 in the manner shown in FIGURE 1. The unit may also be used with the garment in place or removed, as shown in FIGURE 4, as a doily or cushion 28 supported upon the arm rest 29 of a chair 30. With the garment 26 in place within the compartment 25, the unit may also be used as a head rest pillow 32 in the manner shown in FIGURE 5.
Another one of the features of the present invention is that the unit may be worn as a hat 35 after the garment 26 has been removed. This automatically provides protection for the head of the wearer and also eliminates the necessity for having to store the carrying case while the. garment is being worn. As was hereinbefore explained, the access opening 22 is to one side of the longitudinal center of the one panel 13, thus defining a Wider side 37 and a narrower side 38 of this one panel 13. As a result, there is sufficient material on the wider side 37 to enable it to be drawn downwardly over the forehead of the person, as shown in FIGURES 7 and 8 of the drawing, while the narrow side 38 thereof is sufiicientlylarge enough to cover the back of the head.
Another advantage to placing the access opening 22 on center in the aforementioned manner is that at least one side of this panel 13 has suflicient material to substan- It will now be recognized that a unit has been provided which simultaneously provides convenience, comfort, and protectionagainst adverse weather conditions. With the garment stored within the unit in the manner shown in FIGURE 1, it can be conveniently carried from place to place and used as an arm and headrest whenever the occasionfor such arises. When the garment is removed, the case may be used as a head covering, thus While this invention has been described with particular reference tothe construction shown in the drawing,
his to be understood that'such is not to be construed as imparting limitations upon the invention, which is j best defined by the claims appended hereto.
'Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A combined crushable, shape-conformable and shapereassumable carrying case and hat comprising a first oval panel and a second oval panel of substantially the same size and shape, fastening means securing the peripheral edges of said panels together to define a central compartment therebetween, said first panel having a longitudinal intermediate access opening communicating with the interior of said compartment and extending substantially parallel to and on one lateral 'side of the longi tudinal central axis of said first panel, releasable fastening means selectively opening and closing said access opening, said panels being formed of flexible and crushable plastic film, and said first mentioned fastening means comprising stitching securing the peripheral edges of said panels-together, and binding encircling the peripheral edges of said panels, the distance around the periphery ofsaid binding being substantially greater than the circumference of said panels, a greater part of said binding being secured to a greater portion of the periphery of said secured panels, and a smaller part of said binding being in free spaced relationship with said panels to define a carrying loop handle.
2. A combined carrying case and hat as set forth in claim 1 wherein said loop handle is adjacent to one longitudinal end of said panels; a 3. A combined carrying case and hat as set forth in claim 2 wherein said releasable fastening: means comprises a slide fastener. v
