The present invent-ion relates to improve ments in hand bags and has reference more particularly to an improved frame construction therefor.

One of the principal objects of the present invention is to provide a hand bag wherein the frame therefor has a portion of the top thereof so constructed as to constitute suitable handles to facilitate carrying of the bag and the handles being so arranged as to relieve the strain from the handles at their first point of connection, the strain being distributed equally over the entire frame.

A further object is to provide a hand bag 1-5 construction of the above mentioned character, which is simple, inexpensive, strong and durable.

Other objects of the invention will become apparent as the nature of the invention proceeds and when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.

In'the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application and wherein like reference characters designate like parts 935 throughout the several views:

Figure 1 is a perspective View of one form of the hand bag embodying my invention.

Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view, taken approximately on the line 22 of Figure 1.

Figure 3 is a similar section, taken on the line 33 of Figure 1.

Figure 4 is a detail perspective View on a smaller scale, of a modification of the frame construction for the hand bag, and Figure 5 is a perspective View of a further modification of the frame construction for the hand bag.

In the drawings, with reference more particularly to Figures 1 to 3 inclusive, wherein there is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates generally my improved hand bag, the same comprising a pair of identical parallel spaced frame units, denoted by the

reference characters

2 and 3 respectively. Each of these frame units consists of a length of cord, tape, metal strip or tube, that is shaped to form a substantially elliptical design, and each frame is covered with suitable material, such as cloth or leather as indicated at 4, in Figure 3, to

form a welt 5, the purpose of which will be presently described.

As is clearly shown in Figure 1, the intermediate portion of each frame, at the top side thereof, is so constructed as to form a handle portion 6. Side forming pieces of material denoted by the reference character 7 are stitched to the welt portion of each frame, and an additional strip of material is also stitched to the welt of the frame, at the bot- 43 tom and sides thereof, whereby to provide a bottom portion 8 and the end gussets 9.

The upper edgesof the side forming sections 7, as well as the gussets 9 terminate at the point where the handle portions extend from the top of the frames.

The handle portions 6 will be formed in such a manner that the hand of the user will permit it to pass between the upper edges of the side sections 7 of the bag and the crown portions of the handle so as to facilitate the carrying of the bag in an efiicient manner, and the strain will be taken off of the handles at their point of contact with the bag and will be distributed equally around the entire circumference of the elliptical shaped frames, thus rendering the bag strong and durable.

In Figure 4 I have shown a modification of of the frame construction, wherein only one frame is employed and this frame is denoted generally by the reference character 10 and is bent to provide parallel spaced curved side portions 11 and 12, straight bottom portions 13 and the upper ends of the curved side portions constitute upwardly directed handles 14. The side sections of the bag shown in Figure 4 and the gusset and bottom sections are attached to the frame, in a manner similar to that in which the side sections, bottom and gussets are attached to the frames in Figure 9 1. The handle portions 14 are so formed that the arm of the user will be disposed through the handle portions parallel with the gussets, as in Figure 1, the arm of the user will pass through the handle portions 6 at right angles 9 to the gussets 9.

Figure 5 shows a further modification wherein the frame is of a unitary structure and is denoted by the reference character 15 and the frame is slightly different in design than that embodied in Figures 1 and 4, but the salient features present in this frame in that the top portions thereof are so constructed as to form parallel spaced handles 16, that are disposed With respect to the gussets of the bags in the same relation as the handles 6, of the bagshown in Figure 1.

It will thus be seen from the foregoing description that I have provided a hand bag wherein the frame therefor is so constructed as to include the handle-for the bag, andbyarranging the parts in this manner, the bag will be rendered strong and durable and there will be no possibility of the handles becoming broken off or disengaged from the frame, such as frequently happens where separatehandles are employed for use in -,conjunction with hand bags, suit cases and the like.

It is to be understood, also, that I do not Wish to limit myself to the particular shape in which the frame may befbent orformed, nor the particular material that may be used in constructing the frames, and the handles.

I claim:

A bag of the character described comprising in combination a container portion including bottom, side and end walls, va frame formed from Wire and including sides and ends each of the sides of said frame being substantially inverted U-shape, means unitingthe container portion to the frame, with the sides of the container portion connecting corresponding end portions of the sides of the frame; the bottom Wall of the container portion connecting the ends of the frame; the respective end walls of the container portion connecting opposite end portions of the respective sides of the frame, and the bight or 7-: intermediate portion of the sides of said frame extending above the upper edges of the side and end .walls of the container portion to provide opposed hand grips.
