' CORNER EDGE TRIMMING STRUCTURE Filed March 5, 1955 5&
INVENTOR.
Patented Sept. 14, 1954 CORNER EDGE TRIlVIlVHNG STRUCTURE Philip Hartman, Hillside, N. J., assignor to Kaufmann Luggage 00., Inc., Newark, N. J., a corporation of New Jersey Application March 5, 1953, Serial No. 340,629
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to improvements in means for trimming angular corner edges formed by the junctures of a top or bottom panel with associated side portions of body and/or cover parts of containers, such as luggage and like containers, and for other purposes.
It is an object of this invention to provide a novel trimming structure for external application over angular corner edges of a container, which not only furnishes a cushion-like fender to protect said corner edges from defacement, but also furnishes a pleasing ornamental finish or embellishment which greatly improves the appearance of the container.
The invention has for a further object to provide a novel trimming structure for application to and about a container corner edge, said structure comprising a base strip, a skirt strip and an intermediate Welt strip; said strips being so relatively arranged and joined together (as by stitching), that superposed contiguous marginal portions thereof meet face to face to form an intermediate buffer section; said buffer section being adapted to be disposed to overlie one face of the container corner edge, so that the skirt strip can be folded externally thereover in enclosing relation thereto.
Another object of the invention is to provide a trimming structure formed as above stated, which, when operatively applied over and about a container corner edge, will dispose the external welt bead of the welt strip thereof in extension along and adjacent to the apex of the converging surfaces of said container corner edge.
The above and other objects will be understood from a reading of the following detailed description of this invention in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary plan view of a container equipped with the novel corner edge trimming structure of this invention; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view, taken on line 3-3 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective and crosssectional view of the corner edge trimming structure detached from a container corner edge.
Similar characters of reference are employed in the hereinabove described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, the corner edge trimming structure of this invention comprises a base strip I of selected width, a skirt strip II also of selected width, and a welt strip folded or doubled transversely upon itself and about a filler core 12 to form a welt bead 13, the meeting marginal portions of said folded Welt strip providing an anchoring portion or wing M by which the welt bead I3 is supported. The base strip ID, the skirt strip II and welt strip can each be produced from desired flexible material, such as leather, a suitable plastic, a suitable fabric, or the like.
In fabricating the trimming structure ready for use, the welt strip, having been folded upon itself to form the welt bead l3 and its anchoring portion or wing I4, is superposed upon the base strip III to overlie a marginal portion l5 thereof, thus disposing the welt bead I3 in longitudinal extension along said base strip I0 intermediate the longitudinal edges thereof. This having been done, a marginal portion 16 of the skirt strip H is overlaid upon the anchoring portion or wing H of the welt strip, whereupon the thus assembled strips are joined together by a longitudinally extending line of stitching ll sewn therethrough along and adjacently beneath the welt bead l3. The marginal portion I5 of the base strip [0, the anchoring portion or wing I4 of the welt strip, and the marginal portion [6 of the skirt strip II, as superposed, one upon another, project outwardly from the line of switching I! by which the strips are joined, so that the assembly of these portions forms a buffer section of substantial thickness.
The trimming structure assembly, as above described, is now ready for application along and about the external angular corner edge of a container, such e. g. as a corner edge formed by the juncture of a horizontal panel I8 and vertical side portions IQ of a container part, as shown. To apply the trimming structure to such container part corner edge, the outer part of the base strip [0, which extends freely outward from the welt bead I3, is overlaid upon and along the marginal surface of the container panel [8, and is then secured to said panel I8, preferably by a line of stitching 20 sewn therethrough, inwardly of and parallel to the free edge of said outer part of base strip I 0. The inner part of said base strip l0, which carries the welt strip and skirt strip, is thereupon folded downwardly over and around the container corner edge so as to overlie and extend along the marginal surface of the container side portions l9, and so as to position the welt beadrl3 in extension along and adjacent to the apex of the convergent surfaces of the con tainer panel l8 and side portions l9, and preferably so that said welt bead l3 lies in a plane parallel to the plane of the container side portions 19. After the base strip l and welt bead [3 have been thus disposed, the buffer section, which is formed by the inner marginal portions I5 and I6 of the base and skirt strips and the intermediate anchoring portion or wing M of the welt strip, will lie contiguous to and along the surface of the container side portions l9, to project outwardly therefrom below the welt bead l3, whereupon the outer part of the skirt strip II, which projects freely beyond the buffer section, is folded down over and around said buffer section, and so as to abut its free marginal edge portion against the container side portions [9; said marginal edge portion being thereupon secured to the container side portions l9, preferably by a line of stitching 2| sewn therethrough, thus completing the mounting and attachment of the trimming structure about and coextensively along the circuit of the container corner edge.
From the above description and an inspection of the accompanying drawings, it will be apparent that the novel trimming structure of this invention, as applied over and along the external angular corner edges of a container or the like, not only provides a pleasing ornamental finish or embellishment of said corner edges, but also provides protective covering for said corner edges which includes a buffer section of substantial thickness enclosed by the skirt strip of the trimming structure. This buffer section forms a cushion-like fender contiguous to a face of the corner edge which is well adapted to prevent defacement or marring of the corner edges. The provision of the exposed welt head I 3 at the juncture of the base strip I0 and skirt strip H also contributes to the corner edge protective characteristics of the trimming structure, and, since this exposed welt bead can be made of material of color contrasting to the color or colors of the base and welt strips, said welt bead (3 also contributes to the decorative appearance of the trimming structure.
Having now described my invention, I claim: In combination with an external angular corner edge portion of a container or like body, an enveloping trimming and buffer forming structure therefor comprising a base strip secured to and over said corner edge portion in extension longitudinally along the same across the apex thereof, a welt core, a welt strip folded transversely upon itself about said welt core to form a welt bead, the marginal portions of said welt strip being superposed in contiguous relation to form an anchoring wing extending radially from said Welt bead, said anchoring wing being superposed upon a longitudinal marginal portion of the base strip contiguous to one face of the container corner edge portion, so as to locate the welt bead intermediate the opposite longitudinal marginal portions of said base strip for extension along and adjacent to the apex .of said conof said skirt strip, the freely projecting external longitudinal portion of the skirt strip being disposed over said assembled portions of the base and skirt strips and intermediate welt bead anchoring wing in covering relation thereto, with its free marginal edge portion secured to an adjacent face of said container corner edge portion.
