PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT P. LEE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
METAL BASKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 17, 1922.
Application filed December 13, 1920. Serial No. 430,269.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT P. LEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook andState of Illinois. have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Metal Baskets, of which the following is a. full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to metal baskets and has for its object the provision of a simplified construction for baskets of this character.
I will describe one form which my improved basket may take more in detail by referring to the accompan ing drawing illustrating the same, in whic Fig. 1 is a top view of a basket constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view online 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an end view partly in section illustrating features of construction;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view on line H of Fig. 3, and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
My improved basket has the bottom portion, 10 together with the two side walls 11, 12, and the end walls 13, 14, all punched from a single piece of sheet metal. The end and side walls are bent upwardly into the position shown in the drawings and each side wall at each extremity has extending wings 15 which. are bent substantially rectangularly to the main side portions so that these wings overlap the end portions to be there riveted in place by the rivets 16. These rivets may be hollow if desired. A rectangular basket with sloping side and end walls is thus provided which is strong and substantial. The upper extremity of each side and end Wallis curled about a strengthening ring 17 preferably in the form of a wire, which materially increases the rigidity of the structure. The side and end walls have grooved portions, such as the the grooved portions 18 and 19, which strengthen these side and end walls for purposes which will be'readily understood. The bottom portion 10 is also provided with grooved portions 20 for strengthening purposes. These grooves raise the main bottom portion from the floor.
Holes 21 are provided at the lowest portions of the grooves 20 so as to permit drain age should water enter the basket. Holes 22 are provided in the main bottom portion to permit circulation of air. One of the prime objects of the invention is the provision of suitable handles which will not prevent the baskets from being telescoped when transported empty from place to place, and which handles will be so attached to the basket that no large openings are formed in. the end walls, as such large openings would be objectionable in permitting loose articles placed within the basket to fall out. To this end I cut away a portion of the end walls in two places as at 23 where these end walls are turned about the Wire 17. It will be noted that the cut away portion extends only a very short distance below the bottom of the grooved portion so that no large opening is formed. The handle 2-1 has the downwardly extending bearing portions 25, 26 which are formed up from the material proper of the handle, the material of the handle immediately above the bearing portion being twisted at right angles so that the bearing portions may be properly aligned. These bearing portions fit the wire 17 at the cut away portions 23 and this structure is more readily apparent from Figs. 2 and 3. The main grasping portion of the handle, that is the portion 27 is rounded as seen more clearly in Fig. 3 so as to avoid cutting the fingers or hands when carrying the basket.
In Fig. 5 I show a modified form. of handle attachment, the handle bearing 25 encircling both the ring 17 and its envelope of end wall material where this material is bent about the ring.
From what has been thus described the nature of my invention will be readily clear, and it will also be clear that modifications may be made within the scope of the a pend'ed claim.
Having thus described certain forms which my invention may take what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A metal basket of the character described having a bottom, side and end walls formed of a single piece of sheet metal bent to form a basket, certain of said walls having projecting portions bent to engage the contiguous wall, means for fastening the projecting portions in place against said contiguous wall, a strengthening ring around the top edge of said basket and enveloped by material bent from the side and end walls, and a sheet metal handle mounted on said strengthening ring and having a cylindrical portion closely sumiounding the same and said enveloping material and turning there on, said end walls being provided with open mgs adapted to closely receive the portions of said handles surroundmg said ring, said side and end walls being otherwise impertorate whereby abasket having substantially miperforate sldeand end Walls is provided,
saidhandle having a grippingportion twist-
