JAMES S. PEIRONNET, OF WHEATON, ILLINOIS.
CHICKEN-HOVEL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES S. PEIRONNET, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVheaton, county of Dupage, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chicken-I-Iovels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to poultry culture and more specifically to devices commonly known as hovels or coops employed in such zirt 1for the protection of younger domestic The object of my invention is to provide a device of the character mentioned which will be especially applicable for the protection of a hen and her brood; a further object being to provide a device which will be of great efiiciency in serving in such capacity and which will be strong and durable and eX- tremely simple of construction, hence of low cost to manufacture.
A still further object is to provide a hovel which may be readily taken apart or assembled, hence a device of a hygienic nature inasmuch as because of such characteristic the same may be readily examined and cleaned.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
WVith these objects in view my invention consists in a hovel characterized as above mentioned and in certain details of construction and arrangement of parts all as will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawingsforming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the complete device, a portion of the cover thereof being broken away and the exposed portion of the interior member or housing shown in section, Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on substantially the line w m of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the outer mesh wall or closure of the device, Fig. 4C is a perspective view of the inner housing embodied in the construction, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the lid or cover of the device.
Referring now to the drawings 1 indicates a preferably circularly formed net work, the same being constructed preferably of wire mesh, such member being of any suitable dimensions. Suitably secured to said member upon the inner surface thereof, the same being coextensive in length therewith are Patented May 24, 1910.
Serial No. 4%,601.
diametrically opposed longitudinally extending cleats 2. Removably arranged within the member 1, the same being coextensive in length therewith, is a semicylindrically formed member or housing 3 of a diameter slightly less than that of the member 1. Said member is preferably comprised of a substantially rectangular front member 1 preferably formed of wood and a curved rearward portion 5 preferably formed of sheet metal, the latter being secured to the member 41- preferably by means of nails or tacks 6. hen said member 8 is positioned in the member 1, the longitudinal edge por tions of the front surface of the member 1- thereof rest in engagement with the lateral edge portions of the cleats 2, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, hence the same is held against relative movement therein other than in a vertical line. Removal or detachment of said member, by such construction, may be effected either by elevating the same or the member 1. Provided in the lower edge of the front wall of the member 3, preferably close to one end thereof, is an opening 7 through which the inmates of the hovel may ass.
p 8 is a preferably sheet metal cover or lid and 9 a knob or handle therefor, said cover being provided with a depending peripheral flange 10 adapted to engage the upper outer edge portion of the member 1 when in position thereon. Because of said cover being made removable communication with the interior of the hovel, as when supplying feed for the inclosed fowl or for other reasons may be readily effected.
By the provision of a device of the construction as shown and described, a hovel of great efficiency and of strong, durable and economical construction will be provided.
While I have shown what I deem to be the preferable form of my device, I do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be many changes made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention comprehended within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of an outer mesh closure open at its upper extremity, an inner housing detachably arranged within said closure and provided with a passage communicating with said outer closure, and a cover for said outer closure, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of an outer substantially cylindrical mesh closure open at its upper and lower extremities, an inner substantially semi-cylindrical housing detaohably arranged within said closure and provided with a passage communicating with said outer closure, and a removable cover for said outer closure, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of an outer mesh closure open at its up er and lower extremities, a housing arranged within said closure, means provided upon the inner surface of said closure for holding said housing in position therein, said housing being provided with an opening communicating with the interior of said closure, and a removable cover for said closure, substantially as described.
4L. In a device of the class described, the combination of an outer wire mesh closure open at its upper and lower extremities, a housing having its upper and lower extremities open arranged within said closure, said housing being of a cross sectional area less than that of said closure, said housing being provided with an opening communicating with the interior of said closure, and a removable cover for said closure, substantially as described.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination of an outer cylindrical wire mesh closure, a semi-cylindrical housing arranged within said closure and provided with a passage communicating with said closure and cleats provided on the inner surface of said closure and adapted to hold said housing against rotary movement therein, substantially as described.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination of an outer cylindrical wire mesh closure open at top and bottom, a semicylindrical housing of substantially the same height and arranged within said closure, the said housing being open at top and bottom, and a removable cover for said outer closure, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES S. PEIRONNET.
