UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OTTO STARK, OF NEYV YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT |N ACCORDIONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 212,065, dated February 4, 1879; application filed December 12, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTO STARK, of the city, county, and State of New York, have in vented a new and useful Improvement in Accordions, of which the following is a specifr cation:
My invention relates to the construction of bellows for accordions or other musical instruments of the same character; and consists in certain novel features whereby the bellows are rendered more durable and ornamental, as more particularly hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure. 1 represents one of the frames I make use of in the construction of the bellows. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the bellows partially in section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The bellows A are formed with the box-portion a at the ends, as usual, for containing the reeds.
lieretofore the folding portion between the ends has been made of pasteboard and leather, which, after little use, becomes cracked and worn at the joints.
I insert at the outer edge of the folds wooden frames, as at I), which frames are held in place by glue, or by nails driven through from the outside.
The frames may be inserted at every fold of the bellows,as seen in Fig. 2, or placed only at alternate folds; and also made of material more or less thick, according as may be desired.
In placing the strips 1), I prefer to put a folded strip of paper at the upper and under side of each strip, as at c, to permit the bellows to open farther than when the leather or pasteboard is secured directly to the strips.
The frames or strips 1) serye to retain the bellows in their proper shape, and render the instrument more substantial 5 the bellows made in this manner present abetter appearance than ordinary bellows, and permit of ornamentation by using differently colored strengthening-strips 0 around the outer edge, and metal clasps or corner-pieces may be applied, as atf.
These strips can be applied without adding greatly to the expense, and may be put in when the accordion is first made, or applied to the bellows after they are manufactured, which will be done by slitting the bellows at the folds, placing the frames and pieces of folded paper, and then gluing and nailing the strips 0, to hold the parts together.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent- In combination with the bellows ot' accordions or similar musical instruments, the wooden strips or frames 1), substantially as described and shown, and for the purposes specified.
OTTO STARK.
