Description

April 12, 1938. M. MfKoPPEL WEARING APPAREL Fi-led June 12, 1937 Patented Apr. 12, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
My invention relates to wearing apparel and more particularly to pajamas used for both lounging and sleeping purposes.
The principal object of my invention is to so construct the pajama trousers as to render a pleasing appearance thereto when worn, especially at the closure.
Another object of my invention is to provide against accidental opening of the closure.
Another object of my invention is to construct the closure so as not to reveal the configurations of the underlying body portion and to lengthen the life of the pajamas by reinforcement at this point.
Other objects of my invention will appear from the following description, it being understood that the above general statement of the objects of my invention is intended to explain and not to limit same in any manner.
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of pajama trousers constructed according to my invention.
Fig. 2 is a rear view, partly broken away.
Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig.- 4 is a section'on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
In the drawing, I designates the front flap, which with the inside flap 2, makes up the closure portion of the pajamas P. In this particular construction it is obvious that the flap I is integral with the left side of the trousers while the flap 2 is integral with the right side thereof.
The flap I is cut at its lower end to form the edge 3 and this is sewn to the crotch 3c. The flap I is also sewn to the flap 2 along the line 3a and along the line 3b to the crotch 30. This forms a triangular area of double ply construction useful for concealing the configuration of the underlying body parts and to provide reinforcement against wear.
The pajamas are further provided with a belt 40 4 of any construction which may have the elastic portions 5 and 6 to contribute to the fit, comfort and appearance of the trousers.
The flap I is provided with a button-hole I which engages the button 9 on the belt. The
45 which engages the button In on the belt.
The construction of the upper edge of the flaps is of particular importance to my invention. As seen in Fig. 1, the half of the flap I in which the 50 button-hole I is formed is cut shorter than the underlying portion of the flap 2. On the other side, the flap 2 is cut shorter than the corresponding section of the flap I as seen in dotted lines in the same figure. Thus, when the button- 5 hole I is engaged by the button 9, that side of flap I will be held under a certain tension so that it cannot work loose. Similarly, the button III will be drawn up to meet the button-hole 8 and this flap is further provided with a button-hole a will compensate for any surface irregularities caused by the engagement of the flap I with the longer side of flap 2. This arrangement renders a smooth and flat appearance to the closure by virtue of the tension it is held under. It is not necessary that the top line of the flaps be thus treated but if desired the button-holes or buttons might be shifted to attain the desired result. Either method in efiect results in the flap being cut shorter, and being placed under tension when buttoned, the chances of accidental opening are reduced to a minimum. In addition, the elastic portions 5 and 6 of the belt help to maintain the lateral tension of the flaps so as to contribute to the smooth appearance of the closure.
I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention but it is obvious that numerous changes and omissions may be made without departing from its spirit. For example, should it be desirable toomit the shortness in the inside button means, this may be done and it is understood that my invention covers this variation.
I claim:-
1. In a garment having a crotch, a closure comprising a rear flap, a front flap connected to said rear flap at said crotch and adapted to engage said rear flap at a corner point of said rear flap and at an inside point of said rear flap, the engaging means of said rear flap at said corner point being spaced a shorter distance from the crotch along the fabric than the complementary engaging means on said front flap, the engaging means of said rear flap at said inside point being spaced a longer distance from the crotch along the fabric than the complementary engaging means on said front flap.
2. In a garment having a crotch, a closure comprising in combination a rear flap, a front flap overlapping said rear flap and adapted to engage said rear flap at a corner point of said front flap and at an inside point of said front flap, the upper edge of said front flap extending diagonally downwardly from the longitudinal axis of the garment in the direction of said corner point, the upper edge of said rear flap extending diagonally downwardly from the longitudinal axis of the garment in the direction of said inside point, said corner point engaging means on said front flap being spaced a shorter distance from the crotch along the fabric than its complementary engaging means on said rear flap, said inside point engaging means on said front flap being spaced a longer distance from the crotch along the fabric than its complementary engaging means on said rear flap.
