Description

J. WILSON. Sash-Fastener and Burglar-Alarm.
No. 2H,288. I Patented Jan. 7,1879.
Faye;
N-PETERS. PHDTD-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
JEFFERSON WILSON, OF BEAVER FALLS, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-FASTENER AND BURGLAR-ALARMf Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 211,288, dated-January 7, 1879 application filed September 17, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEFFERSON W1LsoN, of Beaver Falls, Beaver county, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Sash Fastener and Burglar-Alarm, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists in certain devices constructed to connect sashes together and to give an alarm when one sash is moved inde pendently of the other; and these objects I effect by the construction shown in the drawing, in which-- Figure l is an elevation of a window, showing my improvements; Fig. 2, a sectional elevation; and Fig. 3, adetached sectional view, enlarged.
A is the frame of the window, 111 which slide the unbalanced sashes B C. To the inner face of either upright of the sash Bis secured a plate, I, having projections a and a lug, a, at the upper end, to which lug is, connected a cord or chain, 00, passing over a pulley, b, and having at the end a ring, 0, and handle d.
On the upper edge of the sash O, opposite the plate I, is secured a case, D, in which are pivoted two dogs, 0 i, a cord, 3 being connected to the upper dog, 0, and passin gthrough an opening in the case D. The inner end of the dogt' projects beyond the ease, and the lower outer end extends through an opening in the case, and bears against a spring-bar, h, the lower end of which is bent so as to bear against one of the window-panes.
To the case D are secured hooks s, and in the sash U are openings 1, to secure similar detachable hooks, upon any one of which the ring 0 may be readily caught by means of the handle (I, so as to connect the two sashes, that one may balance the other, thus maintaining both or either in any desired position.
The dog 0, falling forward, catches beneath the lugs a and locks the upper sash in any position to which it may be raised, but may be drawn back to release the sash by means of the cord 11 and may be retained by passing the cord beneath a spring-finger, 10.
Should an attempt be made to move one sash independently of the other, the lugs a, striking the end of the dog 2', will vibrate the latter, so that the spring-bar h will strike the pane and sound an alarm.
The alarm may be thrown out of operation by depressing the dog 43 until the bar h slips into a notch, 9, in the side of the dog.
It will be seen that the combined alarm, locking, and balancing device consists solely of the plate I, pulley b, case D, and its attachments, capable of being readily applied to any window.
I claim-- 1. The attachment for window-sashes, con sisting of the toothed bar I, adapted to one of the sashes, and the case D, adapted to the other, and provided with dogs 0 i and springbar It, bent to bear on the pane, as set forth.
2. The combination of the case D, dog 2', and elastic bar h, connected at one end to the case and bearing with the other on the pane, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
. JEFFERSON \VILSON.
