UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
WILLIAM E. KAY, OF BROOKLYN, NEYV YORK.
IM PROVEM ENT IN SASH-BALANCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 206,675, dated August 6, 1878; application filed December 22, 1877.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. KAY, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented anew and Improved Sash-Lock, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a window having my improved lock attached. Fig. 2 represents the lock in detail.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to looks for the meeting-rails of window-sashes and to the balancing of the sashes; and it consists in a springbolt provided with a lever, with which is connected a cord for raising the window. The said cord runs over a pulley attached to the top of the window-frame, and downward within easy reach. By pulling the cord the bolt is withdrawn and the window is raised, allas hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, A is the upper sash, and B the lower one. C is an iron frame, that is attached to the meeting-rail a of the lower sash, B, and contains the bolt b, that is arranged transversely in relation to the meeting-rail, and is thrown, forward toward the sash A by a spring, 0, that is secured in the frame 0, and presses against a pin, 0, that projects from. the under surface of the bolt.
The projecting end of the bolt is beveled on its under surface, to facilitate its engagement with the catch D, which is secured to the upper surface of the meeting-rail f of the upper sash.
A rightangled lever, E, is pivoted in the frame 0, and its shorter arm extends downward into a notch in the bolt b. Its longer arm extends outward to the outer edge of the meeting-rail, and is apertured or provided with a suitable fastening for receiving the cord g. This cord extends upward, and passes over a pulley, h, that is suspended from the top of the window-frame. It then extends downward within easy reach.
By pulling the end of the cord downward the lever E is turned on its pivot and the bolt is Withdrawn from the catch D, and the continued pulling of the cord raises the sash.
When the sash is moved downward, the bolt engages the catch automatically.
When it is desired to lower the upper sash, the bolt is withdrawn by simply pulling the cord, when the upper sash is pushed down.
I am aware that in sash balances a dog with tongue, finger-piece, griper, lock-bolt, and spring has been used; also, that two pulleys, a cord, and spring-clutch have been combined with a rod pivoted to clutch, passing through a hole in casting, and provided with an end eye.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent In a sash lock and balance, the combination, with sashes A B, frame 0, and catch D, of the spring-bolt b, notched, beveled 011 under side, and pressed againsta projecting pin, 8, together with lever E, for retracting the same, as shown and described.
WILLIAM EDWARD KAY.
