Description

B. HOLLINGSWOBTH] Fastening for Latches.
No. 201,675. Patentd March 26, 1878,.
tNVEN WITNESSES a ATTORNEYS? MPEIERS, PHOTO LTHOGRAF WASHINGTON. 0 Cl UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
BENJAMIN HOLLINGSWORTH, OF SIGOURNEY, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENINGS FOR LATCH ES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,675, dated March 26, 1878 application filed V 1 February 25, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN HOLLINGS- WORTH, of Sigourney, in the county of Keokuk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Door-Fastening, of which the "following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents an inside elevation of my improved door-fastening; and Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section of the door on line .20 m, Fig. 1, showing fastening in side view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention is designed to furnish an improved door-fastening for out-buildings, such as barns, granaries, smoke-houses, 850.; and it consists of a pendent bolt, dropping into blocks of the door-casing, and locking the latch, that is opened by a string from the outside, in the'usual manner. The bolt is raised or lowered by a cord or chain passing over pulleys to the outside of the building.
Referring to the drawing, A represents a door of an outhouse of the farm, such as barns, smoke-houses, &c. The door is opened by raising an inside latch, B, to which a string, a, is applied, and then passed through a hole, b, in the door, to the outside of the same, for the purpose of closing the door by pulling thereon, and forming then a kind of blind to represent the old latch and string. The latch drops into a recessed catch or block, b, of the casing, which catch is perforated for the passage of a vertical fastening-bolt, O.
The door-casing is provided above the lower catch with two or more perforated blocks, 1),
through which a pendent bolt, 0, passes, that is dropped into the blocks by its own Weight, and guided to the holes by a suitable guide device.
The bolt 0 is suspended from a cord, D, that passes over a swiveled top pulley, D, of the door-casing, and over as many guide-pulleys arranged at suitable distances from each other as required for conducting the cord to a'convenient point at the outside of the outhouse, or to the dwelling, or to any other convenient place.
By raising the bolt the latch may be released from the catchblock and the door opened, while by dropping the bolt the latch is locked, so that the door cannot be opened from the outside, except by one who knows the terminal place of the bolt-operating cord.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The combination of a barn or other door, having the usual latch and operating-string, passing through a hole of the door to the outside of the same, with perforated catch and guide-blocks of the door-casing, and with a pendent bolt that is raised or lowered by a suitable cord-and-pulley mechanism, substantially as and for the purpose described.
BENJAMIN HOLLINGSWORTH.
mark.
