Description

J. W. DICK GARMENT SUSPENDER Jan. 18, 1938.
Filed Jan. 2, 1936 men? Patented Jan. 18, 1938 UNE'EEQ STATES LWESQS PATENT OFHQE GARMENT SUSPENDER James WardDick, High River, Alberta; Canada 6 Claims.
in which a swivel connection is incorporated; theobjects being:
FiTSi'.-TO provide an easy means of removing the twist out of the brace or tabs without the necessity of unfastening the tabs from either the article of clothing or the brace, and which will automatically assume a free working position without danger of injury and will not accidently come apart.
Second. To enable the brace or tabs to be attached to the article of clothing at random, the connection taking care of any accidental twist in either the brace or tabs.
Third.-To provide a. simple arrangement for the disconnection of the brace straps from the tabs. th reby saving the trouble of unfastening the tabs from the wearing apparel.
F0mth.--To fill a long felt want; and to enable the wearer of the brace to adjust the same, and more especially the rear part, while in use, with self-help only; and to provide a degree of comfort and convenience not hitherto attainable.
I attain these objects by incorporating at any suitable position or positions in the design of the brace, but preferably at the junction of the tabs with the brace straps, a swivelling device, being a fastening so constructed as to allow the parts fastened to rotate about the axis of their fastening and in which the portion to be attached to the garment maintains a position normal to the main supporting member.
Fig. 1 is a front elevation showing my improved form of swivel garment suspender.
Fig. 2 is an elevation in section through line BB, Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an inverted plan View of Fig. 1 in section through line CC and shows the underside of member l9.
Fig. 4 is a cross section at DD (Fig. 1) showing opening connecting with the slot IS.
The accompanying drawing illustrates a practical application of my invention, in which the looped shaped member !9 is supported in the looped end of the strap i3 of the suspender.
The member l9 has the lower portion l9 thereof formed centrally between its ends, with a boss l9x which is provided With a pivot hole I! and a slot !6 extends laterally from. said pivot hole dividing one-half of the portions iii of the loop member from the said pivot hole to the opening l5 at one end of the loop thus forming paired res lient guides.
The garment fastening tabs 20 are connected to a loop member H the upper portion H of which is formed with a central boss llzr which is provided with a hole ill in which a pin I2 is secured. The stem. of the pin l2'is formed with a head i2 spaced from the upper member of the loop ll. and this head is adapted to enter the opening 15 at the outer end of the slot l6 in the loop member I9, said head engaging the upper surfaces of the divided portion i9, while the stem of the pin slips freely into the slot.
The inner and opposite walls of the slot 96 are formed with inwardly projecting detents or ridges i8. arranged closely adjacent to the pivot hole i1 and the space between said detents reduces the width of the slot so that pressure is. required to spring the resilient divided portions of the member 89 apart and to force the stem of the pin tberebetween in order that it may enter the pivot hole.
The stem of the pin I2 is adapted to fit loosely in the pivot hole I! so that it may swing in suspension on its head l2, but the detents l8 prevent the escape of the said pin from the pivot hole into the slot l6, said detents also prevent the pivot pin being tilted to a position other than substantially normal to the member l9 accidentally or without the application of force against the pin in a direction longitudinally of the slot Hi. The pin is thus held from being accidently disconnected or fouled in the slot so that it will not be broken or injured in the ordinary use of the device.
The opening l5 (Fig. 1 and Fig. 3) may be arranged at any desirable point in the member I9.
In my improvement the pivot hole member of the separable swivel connection will allow of retraction taking up the expansion required to pass the stem of the connecting member when it is forced in or out of the pivot hole.
The position of the male and female parts of the connection may be reversed in the braces, if desired.
It is conceivable that one design of the fastener may be more suitable than the other at different parts of the brace and may be combined in the same pair of braces, and that the fastener may be manufactured from any suitable material.
I am aware that, prior to my invention swivel fastenings for braces to support wearing apparel have been made I, therefore, do not claim these broadly but what I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. Braces or suspenders comprising shoulder straps, tabs for attachment to a garment and a separable swivel connection between said straps and said tabs pivoting about a vertical axis and having a slot in one member extending from a pivot hole along its base to one side and widened at the top to disengage the pivot pin and having projections or ridges formed on the inner end of the slot.
2. Braces or suspenders comprising shoulder straps, tabs for attachment to a garment and a separable swivel connection between said straps and said tabs pivoting about a vertical axis and having a slot in one member extending from the pivot hole along its base to one side and widened at the top for disengaging the pivot pin and means for automatically preventing the accidental uncoupling of the swivel connection.
3. In a garment suspender, a member having a stem provided with a head, a member adapted to engage said head having a pivot hole to loosely receive said stem and also having a slot to permit the entry of the head and the passage of said stem to said pivot hole, the sides of said slot being relatively movable toward and away from each other and adapted to hold said stem from accidental displacement from the pivot hole.
4. In a garment suspender, a member having a stem provided with a head, a member adapted to engage said head having a pivot hole to loosely receive said stem and also having a slot extending to said pivot hole, said slot having resilient side walls converging adjacent to the pivot hole and adapted to spread to permit the passage of said pin to the pivot hole and said side walls also having portions to retain the pin in a position substantially normal to the member in which the pivot hole is arranged.
5. In a garment suspender, a member having a stem provided with a head, a member adapted to engage said head in a swivel support having a slot to permit the entry or removal of said head and stem, the walls of said slot being adapted to be spread apart to permit the entry of said stem to its normal operative position, and to automatically return to their normal position following the entry of the stem, and hold said stem in its operative position normal to the slotted member against accidental displacement.
6. In a garment suspender, a member having a stem provided with a head, a member adapted to engage said head in a swivel support with its stem extending through a centrally arranged pivot hole, the latter member having a slot leading to said pivot hole, said slot being enlarged at its outer end to permit the entry of the head and stem and constricted at its inner end adjacent to the pivot hole to prevent free entry and exit of the stem to the pivot hole, the walls of said slot being resilient and permitting the forcing of the stem to and from the pivot hole and adapted to retain the stern in said hole against accidental displacement.
