UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH A. BRUCE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT lN LETTERS AND NUMBERS FOR SIGNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 209,796, dated November 12, 1878; application filed September 30, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosEPH ALEXANDER BRUCE, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wooden Letters and Numbers for Signs, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a front view of one of my improved letters, illustrating two styles of construction. Fig. 2 is a detail cross-section of the same, taken through the line a a, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail cross-section of the same, taken through the line y y, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish improved letters and numbers for signs, which shall be more durable than those constructed in the usual way, and less liable to separate from the sign or wall, and which at the same time shall be very conspicuous, and may be ornamented to any desired extent.
This invention consists of letters and numbers for signs made of two or more thin layers of wood with the grain running in different directions, and provided with plates of transparent or opaque 'glass setin their cut-out or recessed middle parts, and in letters and numbers for signs made of two or more thin layers of wood with the grain running in different directions, provided with plates of transparent or opaque glass set in their cut-out or recessed middle parts, and covered with an ornamental scroll-work, as hereinafter fully described.
The body of the letters and numbers is made of two or more thin layers, A, of wood, with the grain running in difl'erent directions, as
' indicated in Figs. 2 and 3. The body ofthe letters and numbers has its middle part out out, as shown in Fig. 2, or recessed, as shown in Fig. 3, and in the cavity thus formed is placed a glass plate, B, which may be transparent or opaque. In either case the glass may be covered with an ornamental scrollwork, 0, as shown in the lower part of Fig. 1.
The letters may be made of any desiredstyle, and may be plain or ornamental, as may be desired. The letters may also be gilded, or may be painted of any desired color, as taste may dictate, or the background upon which they are to be placed may require.
This construction of the body. of the letters will prevent them from warpin g and splitting, and will thus make them more durable, and render them less liable to become detached.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Letters and numbers for signs made of two or more thin layers, A, of wood, and provided with cut-out portions, into which are placed plates B of transparent or opaque glass, inserted in grooves in one of the intermediate layers, substantially as described.
2. Letters and numbers for signs made of two or more thin layers, A, of wood, and pro vided with cut-out portions, into which are placed plates B ot'transparent or opaque glass, protected by ornamental scroll-work 0, substantially as described.
