LEAF HOLDER DEVICE Filed May 8, 1935 Patented June 22, 1937 PATENT OFFICE LEAF HOLDER DEVICE Scipione M. Del Camp, Maywood, Ill., assignorv to Cinch Manufacturing Corporation, Chicago, Ill., a corporation of Illinois Application May 8, 1935, Serial No. 20,350
11 Claims.
My invention-aims to provide -an improved leaf `holder Yfor checks, sales slips and the like.
f yIn the drawing which represents prefered embodiments of my invention:
v vFigure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of a bindvfing cover with two of my U-shaped holding members attached -to a `portion of the cover;
Fig. 2 is alongitudinal section taken along the line 2-2 "ofFig 1;
Fig. 3 is afragmentary transverse section taken Y along the line 3-3 of Fig. l;
Fig. 4 isa side view of one of my U-shaped holding members;
Fig. `5 is abottom plan view of my fastening u plate;
*Referring to kthe drawing, I have shown in Fig. "1"'a`bii1rdin'g cover having a vfront portion I and y" '1a backportion which are hinged to an inter- ,"iiediate end portion 3 in any suitable manner.
Attached'lto one portion of the cover, and in preferred form Ihave chosen the back portion2, Ihave provided a pair of U-shaped hold- A'ing members 4 which are substantially U-shaped in cross-section, the open portion being outermost. Said U-shaped holding members have the Vlegs 5Y and 6 joined together by the curved bridge ,40 portion 1.,.Portions have been cut away from theafree edges of the legs to form T-shaped at- .;.taching elements at the termination of said legs, said-attaching elements comprising, in `my pre- `ferre'd form,- a bow-shaped head portion 8 and 45-a'neck 4portion-9 'which joins the portion 8 to '-the"legs,"as shown in Figs. 4 and 8.
The attaching elements are formedintegral with the legs 5 vand vIi and extend in the same 'plane'therefrom and shoulder portions IU are olformed 'on the legs 5 and a at the junction of `s'a`i'd` legs with the neck portions 9.
Asfafmeans of attaching my U-shaped holding `rnembers to the cover portionr 2, I have provided Y55 the sheet metal fastening plates II and I I which are located adjacent to each side of the cover portion 2, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
Thefastening plates, as illustrated in Figs. 5 and 7, are identical in form, are preferably rectangular in shape and have the pairs of embossments I2 and I2 pressed outward, said embossments being located at a spaced distance apart. Substantially in the center of the embossments I2 and I2', I have cut out the apertures I3 and I4 which are bow-shaped in my preferred form and placed in spaced position to receive the bow-shaped head portions 8 of the attaching elements.
To fasten the U-shaped member 4 to the cover portion 2, the head portions 8 are extended through the upper plate I I, the cover portion 2 and the lower plate II', and then, with a suitable tool, the bow-shaped head portions are substantially straightened with the result that they will bear upon the walls surrounding the apertures I3 and I4 of the plate II', as shown in Fig. 6. 'Ihe shoulders I0 of the legs 5 and 6 will then bear firmly upon the upper plate I I and the holding members will be securely fastened to the cover, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
Due to the embossments I2 and I2', the head portions 8 will not extend beyond the plane of l the plate I I after attachment thereby providing the open face of said lower plate with a relatively smooth surface.
In assembling the component parts of my leaf holding device, I prefer to cut from the cover 2 two pairs of apertures, veach of said pairs being located at a spaced distance apart on said cover, the apertures of each individual pair being spaced apart to correspond with the apertures I3 and I4 of the fastening plates I I and I I. A plurality of sheets, which I have not shown in my drawing, are perforated in the usual manner and assembled with one leg of each of the two U-shaped members which I have chosen to represent a prefered form of my invention. The plates II and II are then placed in position in relation to the apertures in the cover 2, and the U-shaped members, together with the sheets they carry, are permanently fastened to the cover 2 in the manner which has been described.
Although I have preferred to attach only two of the U-shaped members to the cover, it is understood that as many of these may be em ployed as desired. Also, though I have chosen a binding cover to illustrate my invention, I do not wish to limit myself thereby, but realize that the U-.shaped members could be attached to any CII suitable support which would carry out a practical application of my invention.
In Figs. 9 and l0, I have illustrated a modification of my invention. In this form I have chosen to place one attaching plate i I adjacent to the side of the apertured binder cover 2 opposite the U-shaped holding member ll. The legs of the U-shaped member are extended through the apertures of the cover 2 and fastened to the plate H in the manner which has been described. A covering material l5 is hinged to a portion of the binder cover and extended over the lower face of the plate il and then fastened to the binder cover in any suitable manner thereby hiding the lower face of the attaching plate and giving the binding a neat and attractive appearance.
While I have illustrated and described preferred embodiments of my invention, I donot wish to be limited thereby, because the scope of my invention is best dened bythe following claims.
