yThe present invention relates to improvements in binders, and particularly binders of the type in which the. contents are separable from the cover, whereby the former maybe renewed or replaced as required.
It has been found desirable to manufacture memorandum books, note books, desk pads, and the like, as units, comprising a cover and a .separable filler, which may be readily secured to and removed from the cover. Usually the ller is a relatively small sized pad comprising a plurality of sheets of. paper bound together at one edge and provided with perforations near that edge whereby the sheets may be torn off. The cover may take the form of a book having a back and two covers hingedly mounted thereto, or a pad adapted to be placed on a desk and comprising a relatively heavy base, a backv section and a flap hingedly secured to the latter.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive mounting for a separable ller and cover.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved mounting means for a separable ller'and cover, so constructed that the filler may be readily and simply secured to and removed from the cover, and yet rmly held against twisting or slipping when properly secured to the cover.
A further object of the invention is to provide a mounting that is relatively light, but sturdy, in construction and one that does not render the assembled unit either bulky or unsightly.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the ensuing description of a preferred embodiment and modications thereof.
In the course of the description, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings in which:

Referring first to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, in which a preferred embodiment of the present invention is illustrated, there is provided a binder comprising a cover IIl and a iiller I2 adapted to be detachably secured thereto. The term cover is used generically herein to designate any book-like construction, such as a desk pad, memorandum book, check book, or the like, constructed in accordance with the present invention.
y In the present instance the invention is shown applied to a cover comprising a desk pad I4 having secured thereto a vertically extending back section I6, to which is hingedly mounted a flap I8 adapted to cover the ller I2 when the flap is thrown to its forward position. The desk pad may be constructed in any suitable fashion and is illustrated particularly in Figs. 2 and 3 as comprising a relatively heavy base plate 20, to the bottom of which is secured a piece of soft textile 22, such as felt, to prevent the base plate from scratching its supporting structure.
l The desk pad is provided with a suitable cover 24, preferably made of imitation leather and substantially surrounding the top and sides of the base plate 20. The cover is turned in around the bottom, as indicated at 26, to provide a uniform outer surface as well as prevent loosening of the textile 22 from the bottom.
'I'he back section IB and flap I8 are made of relatively heavy strips 28 and 30, preferably made of some material such as cardboard. The two sections are separated by a relatively narrower and weaker section 32 about which the flap may be turned. The back section and flap arel covered by and secured to the pad I4 by suitable covers 34 and 36 substantially surrounding these members. The covers are provided with end portions 38 extending between the outer cover 24 and base plate 28 through an opening 48 formed in the cover 24 immediately below the vertical back section I6.
The filler pad I2 consists of a considerable number of sheets of paper 42 suitably bound atV end 44 in any well known manner. The sheets are perforated at 46 so that they may be readily detached from the pad Whenever desired. The mounting means of the present invention comprises opposed complementary mounting members 48 and 58 secured to the inner side of back section i6 of the cover and the bound end 44o-f the ller pad, respectively. The ller with its mounting member 58 is adapted to be inserted directly into the mounting member 48, as will ap'- pear more fully hereinafter.
The mounting member 48 secured to the cover comprises a substantially U-shaped member secured to the back section I6 by a plurality of rivets 54 passing through the vertically disposed portion 56 connecting together the opposed and substantially parallel portions 58 and 68 of the U-shaped member. The rivets 54 do not disturb the external appearance of the cover 34, for the reason that they do not pass therethrough, as shown in Fig. 2.
The substantially parallel portions 58 and 60 are made slightly resilient and extend away from the back section I6 substantially at right angles thereto, although, as more clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the upper portion 58 is provided with an angular portion 62 extending toward the lower horizontal portion 68. The purpose of this construction is to decrease somewhat the area of engagement between the upper portion 58 and the filler, so that the latter may be more readily removed from the cover. The area oi contact between the substantially U-shaped mounting member 48 and the filler unit is further reduced by constructing the parallel portions 58 and 68 of the latter with substantially symmetrical cut away portions 64 so that the members have shapes somewhat similar to that of a trapezo-id.
In order better and more readily to secure the removable ller unit to the cover, the lower parallel member 68 of the mounting member 48 is provided with a lip 66 that extends forward further than the upper parallel portion. The upper parallel portion 58 may be strengthened by providing it with a beaded edge 68.
The mounting members 48 and 58 are provided with complementary interengaging substantially rectangular projections 'I8 and 12, respectively. Member 58 is secured to the top of the ller unit I2 by claw-like extensions 'I4 formed at its ends and suitably driven into the unit. 'I'hese projections 18 and 'I2' extend substantially transversely to the members upon which they are formed and are located substantially centrally thereon. It may be seen from Fig. 2 that the location is such that the end 44 of the filler abuts against the connecting section 56 of the U'shaped member 48.
From the above description it is apparent that the iiller unit I2 with the complementary mounting member 58 attached thereto may be readily inserted into the U-shaped mounting member 48 and just as easily removed. 'Ihe construction of the lower portion 68 oi the mounting member with the extending lip 66 and the upper portion 58 with its front edge 68 beaded, simplies the insertion. The ller pad is placed on the lip at an angle so that the top side of the bound end rests under and against the rounded yupper portion. Since the portions 58 and 68 are somewhat resilient, it is a simple matter to insert the ller into place from this position.
Once inserted in place, the complementary projections I8 and 72 are held in abutting relation, as shown in Figs, 2 and 3, by the resiliency of the parallel portions of the U-shaped members. The location of these projections so that the ller abutsy the connecting portion 56 of the U-shaped portion, provides additional restraint against slipping or twisting of the filler.
i One of the advantages of the described arrangement is that the filler unit may be inserted fr directly into the cover without the manipulation of locking-means or necessity of sliding it in from one side.
The above described mounting means may be modified, las shown in Fig. 4, for use with wider and larger books or pads. The parallel portions 58 and 68 are made somewhat larger and the former is provided with a plurality of projections 16. These are adapted to engage a plurality of complementary projections formed on mounting member 58 which, however, are not shown in this iigure. Y
In the modied form of the present invention shown in Fig. 5, the cover I8 is of book form and comprises a central back section I6 and a pair of aps I8 hingedly mounted thereto. These may be of any suitable construction and is illustrated as being constructed after the manner of the back section and ap of the previously described modication. The back section and flaps are' constructed of sections 28 and 38 of relativelyV heavy sheet material and are separated by the weakened sections 32, so that the naps may be moved easilyto close the book. 'Ihe back section and aps may likewise vbe provided with suitable imitation leather covers'34 and 36.
The modied mounting means comprises a. substantially U-shaped resilient mounting Arnernltnj-nf secured to the inside of backV section I6 and a second substantially YU,shaped member 82 secured to the bound Y end of ller I2. The U-shaped member 88 has its connecting portion 86 secured to the back section by rivets 88, and the opposed parallel sections 98 and 92 extend away from the back section substantiallyat right angles thereto. The parallel sections have trapezoidal shapes as their outer corner portions are cut away along a diagonal line, as indicated at 94, and are provided withV rectangular projections 86 extending toward each other.
The mounting member 82 extends substantially i the entire width of the ller. The connecting portion 88 thereof fits against the bound end of the filler and the opposed parallel portions I 88 and I82 are secured to the ller by a plurality of projections |84 forced into the filler. The paral-Y lel portions are provided with rectangular projections |86 also extending toward each other.
When the filler with its mounting member 82 Y is inserted into the U-shaped'mounting memberV 88 on the cover, the complementary projections 9-6 and |86. are brought into engagement by the v mounting member which may be attached to the ller and used with a cover mounting member of the type last described. In this figure the ller |2 is provided with a pair (only one of which is shown) of mounting members H secured to opposite sides of the ller by a plurality of inwardly extending projections' H2. An inwardly projecting portion H4, similar to projections 96, is formed on each of these members. When the ller and its mounting member are inserted into the U-shaped cover mounting member 80 of Figs. 5 and 6, the ller is firmly secured in place by the complementary projections, and the end of the filler which ilts against the connecting portion 86.
The modification illustrated in Figs. 8, 9 and l0 also comprises a pair of intertting substantially U-shaped mounting members secured to the cover and filler, respectively. The resilient mounting member H6 has its connecting portion H8 secured to the back section by rivets |20, and the opposed parallel portions |22 and |24 are each provided with a plurality ofvhemispherical projections |26 extending toward each other. The connecting portion is also provided with a pair of spaced apart projections |28 extending away from the back section.
The mounting member |30 has its opposed parallel portions |32 and |34 secured to the filler l2, which is illustrated as having a binding |36 of paper, or the like, by a plurality of inwardly extending projections |31. Instead of being provided with complementary projections adapted to engage projections |26, the parallel portions |32 and |34 are provided with a plurality of perforations |38 into which the projections are adapted to extend when the filler is inserted into the cover. The bottom portion |40 of mounting member |36 is provided with complementary projections |42 into which' the projections |28 extend.
The purpose of providing the bottom portions H8 and |46 with complementary projections, is to decrease further the possibility of twisting or slipping of the filler. Once the ller is inserted in place, it is restrained against movement by interengaging portions on three of its five sides and is, therefore, held in place ilrmly.
It should be evident from the above that the present invention is susceptible oi' various modifications. For instance, while the U-shaped mounting members secured to the covers have been described as constructed of resilient material, they may be constructed only in part of resilient material. It is contemplated that only one of the opposed parallel portions thereof need be made of resilient material, and that other forms of interengaging readily detachable mounting members may be used.
I claim:
l. A binder comprising a separable cover and i'lller, a single unitary substantially U-shaped channel secured centrally of the inside of the back section of said cover provided with a transversely y extending projection on one of the parallel por- Ations thereof, and means including a member secured centrally of said ller and provided with a 'complementary transversely extending projection provided with complementary portions adapted to engage the projections on said mounting member for detachably securing said ller to said cover, said mounting member and last mentioned means being so constructed and arranged that the latter may be directly inserted into the former by movement in the direction of the back section.
3. A mounting for a filler pad adapted to be detachably secured to the back section of a cover, including in combination, a single unitary member secured centrally of and provided with' a resilient portion extending substantially at right angles from said back section and having transversely extending projections, and a single unitary member secured centrally of said ller pad provided with projections similar to those on said portion extending from the back section, said members and projections being so constructed and arranged that the projections resiliently engage each other and the bound end of the pad abuts against the back section whereby the filler pad is held to said cover when the latter is inserted into said resilient portion.

A mounting for a filler bound at one end adapted to be detachably secured to the back section of a cover, including in combination, a substantially U-shaped mounting member secured to the inside of said back section with the opposed parallel portions thereof extending away from said section, a substantially rectangular transversely extending projection formed centrally on the upper of said parallel portions, a relatively small member secured to the central part of the upper side of the bound end of said filler and formed with a complementary projection, said projections being adapted to interengage and the bound end of the filler to abut against the portion of the U-shaped mounting member adjacent the back section when the'ller is inserted into said U-shaped mounting member.

A mounting for a filler adapted to be detachably secured to the back section of a cover, including in combination, a substantially U- shaped mounting member secured to the inside of said back section with opposed parallel portions thereof extending away from said section, a plurality of substantially rectangular transversely extending projections formed on the upper of said parallel portions, a member secured to the upper side of said ller and formed with complementary projections, said projections being adapted to interengage and iirmly hold said filler in said mounting member when inserted therein.
6. A binder comprising a cover, a ller, and
means for detachably mounting said ller in said cover, said means including a resilient substantially U-shaped channel secured to the inside of said cover, a U-shaped channel secured to one end of said iiller and adapted to be inserted into said first mentioned channel, and interengaging portions on said channels adapted to maintain said channels in xed relation to each other when the one is inserted into the other.

A mounting for a filler adapted to be detachably secured to the back section of a cover, including in combination, a substantially U- shaped mounting member secured to the inside of said back section with the opposed parallel portions thereof extending away from said section, a substantially rectangular transversely extending projection on each of said parallel portions, a substantially U-shaped member secured to one end of said iiller and formed with complementary projections on its opposed parallel portions, said projections being adapted to interengage and rmly hold said filler in place when inserted into said U-shaped mounting member.

A mounting for a Vller adapted to be detachably secured to the back section of a cover, including in combination, a substantially U- shaped mounting member secured to the inside of said back section with the opposed parallel portions thereof extending away from said section, a substantially rectangular transversely extending projection on each of said parallel portions, and a member secured to each side of said filler provided with a complementary projection, said projections being adapted to interengage and securely hold said ller in place when inserted in said U-shaped mounting.

A mounting for a ller pad adapted to be detachably secured to the back section of a cover, including in combination, a substantially U- shaped mounting member secured to the inside of the back section with the opposed parallel portions thereof extending away from said section, a plurality of transversely extending projections on each of said parallel portions and the connecting portion, and a U-shaped member secured to one end of said filler and adapted to be inserted into said rst mentioned U-shaped member, said last mentioned member being provided with complementary portions adapted to engage those on said mounting member whereby said ller is held in place against lateral displacement when inserted therein.

A mounting for a filler adapted to be detachably secured to the back section of a cover, including in combination, a substantially U- shaped mounting member secured to the inside of the back section with the opposed parallel portions thereof extending away from said section, a plurality of substantially hemispherical projections extending toward each other formed on said parallel portions, a substantially U- shaped member secured to that end of said ller adapted to be inserted into said mounting member and formed with a plurality of openings on its opposed parallel portions, said openings being so located that projections on the ller extend into the openings when the ller is inserted into said mounting member.
