Description
March 2, 1937. R wYLAND SAFETY GARTER PURSE Filed May 20, 1936 INVENTOR Rullz h/yland BY a ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 2, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SAFETY'GARTER PURSE Rum Wyland, New York, N. ,Y. Application llifay 20, 1936, Serial No. 80,673
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a purse.
The invention has for an object the construction of a purse which may be convenientlycarried beneath the top portion of ones stocking and which may be held in position with the conventional garter customarily worn by women.
More specifically, the invention contemplates the construction of a purse which is characterized by having a flexible strip of material pro.- vided with a pocket structure on one side and with an arrangement for attaching it to the garter of a wearer.
A further object of the invention is to construct the flexible strip with an opening through which a tab from the pocket structure may extend and by which the pocket structure may be securely closed.
Another one of the objects is to provide a snap fastener means for releasably attaching said tab to the outer face of said strip of material.
Still further the invention contemplates the provision of a fool proof means for calling attention to the factthat the tab is not secured in position when the purse is placed in position beneath the top portion of ones hose.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of'the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth. In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary schematic view of the manner in which the purse is applied to ones hose and leg.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary enlarged perspective detailed view of a portion of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a front view of the purse, per se.
Fig. 5 is a rear elevational View of the purse per se.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 7 is a perspective View of a purse constructed according to a modification of this in- Vention.
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary sectional View taken on the line 88 of Fig. '7.
The purse according to this invention, comprises a flexible strip of material Ill having a pocket structure II formed on one side thereof. This pocket structure is provided with a tab I2 which is extendable over the open mouth of the pocket structure, and through an opening I3 in said strip of material I0. An element is arranged on the strip of material III for supporting 4 Claims. (01. 224- 26) the strip on ones garter so that the purse may depend into the top portion of ones stocking. This element comprises a tab I4 which is a con tinuation at the top of the flexible strip of material IB and which is formed with an opening I5. A means is provided for releasably attaching the tab I2 to the outer face ofs'aid strip of material and comprises a snap fastener device I6 mounted respectively on the tab and on the outer face'of the strip Iii.
In Fig. 1 a schematic view is shown of a wearers leg I8 provided with a stocking I9 which is supported by a garter 2|]. The complete garter is not shown. This garter is of the type whichis supported on a corset or foundation garment and which merely has depending portions adapted to engage the top portion of the stocking. Specifically, the garter comprises an inner strip of material 29 which is adapted to have its lower end engaged beneath the top portion of the stocking, and which has a projecting buttonitl adapted to bulge out a portion of the stocking. Another stripflfl is associated with the strip 20 and supports a clamping element 20 which is adapted to engage over the button head and so hold the stocking on the garter.
The purse is placed beneath the top portion of the stocking, as clearly shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, and the tab portion I4 thereof is placed so that the opening I5 engages over the button 20'. This is clearly shown in Fig. 3. Then the element 20 is engaged in place. Thus, it will be noted that the purse is supported beneath the top portion of the stocking.
In Figs. 7 and 8 a modified form of the invention has been disclosed which is very similar to the preferred form except for the provision of a fool proof means for substantially requiring the tab I2 to be closed properly before the purse may be supported on ones garter beneath the stocking. This fool proof means comprises, essentially, a small helical spring 25 which is attached by several stitches 26 in the junction between the tab I2 and the pocket structure II. This helical spring has one end 25 extended partially around the edge of the tab I2 and secured thereto by stitches or loops 21. The other end of the spring 25 extends downwards and is attached by stitches or loops 28 to the wall material of the pocket structure II.
The tab I2 is of such size and so located that when it is free the spring 25 will urge it into a vertical position so that it extends across the tab I4 and across the opening I5, and so prevents the engagement of the purse upon the garter. In order that the purse may be mounted upon the garter it is necessary that the tab first be closed by engaging the snap fastener device I6 into closed position. This snap fastener device comprises a snap fastener socket upon the tab l2 coactable with a snap fastener stud on the front section of the material In.
The pocket structure H is formed by a continuation portion ID from the strip I0 bent at the lower edge Ill of the purse and extended along the back face of the strip [0. Lines of stitches H are engaged through the edges of the strip IE! and the strip portion Ill. This construction produces a pocket which is open at the top.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:-
1. A purse comprising a flexible strip of material having a pocket structure on one side formed with a tab extendable over the open mouth of said pocket and through an opening in said strip of material, an element for supporting said strip of material to ones garter so that said purse depends into the top of ones stocking, and means for releasably attaching said tab to the outer face of said strip of material, said element comprising a tab portion constituting a continuation above said opening and itself having an opening through which the button of a conventional garter may engage.
2. A purse comprising a flexible strip of material having a pocket structure on one side formed with a tab extendable over the open mouth of said pocket and through an opening in said strip of material, an element for supporting said strip of material to ones garter so that said purse depends into the top of ones stocking, means for releasably attaching said tab to the outer face of said strip of material, and a resilient element mounted upon the junction of said tab and said 7 pocket structure and acting to normally force the tab across said element for supporting the strip of material to ones garter.
3. A purse comprising a flexible strip of material having a pocket structure on one side formed with a tab extendable over the open mouth of said pocket and through an opening in said strip of material, an element for supporting said strip of material to ones garter so that said purse depends into the top of ones stocking, means for releasably attaching said tab to the outer face of said strip of material, and a resilient element mounted upon the junction of said tab and said pocket structure and acting to normally force the tab across said element for supporting the strip of material to ones garter, said resilient 7 means comprising a small spring.
4. A purse comprising a flexible strip of mate rial having a pocket structure on one side formed with a tab extendable over the open mouth of said pocket and through an opening in said strip of material, an element for supporting said strip ofmaterial to ones garter so that said purse depends into the top of ones stocking, means for releasably attaching said tab to the outer face of said strip of material, and a resilient element mounted upon the junction of said tab and said pocket structure and acting to normally force the tab across said element for supporting the strip of material to ones garter, said resilient means comprising a small spring, having one end extended and attached along the edge of the tab, and the other end attached to said pocket structure.
