UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
' CHARLES It. BECKER, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN CIGAR-TIP PROTECTORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 206,921, dated August 13, 1878; application filed July 17, 1878.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES R. BECKER, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cigar-Tip Protector and Piercer, of which the following is a specification:
The invention relates to an improvement in cigars, and will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
A represents the cigar, which is of ordinary shapeand construction. bis the tip-protector, consisting of a cone-shaped cap ofthin metal, which may be stamped by dies or otherwise -formed into proper shape to fit on the head or tip of the cigar, as shown in Figure 1, and is provided with a pointed pin, a, secured. within the cap at its apex, and projecting outward a short distance from the opening. When the cap is adjusted on the cigar this pin pierces the end in a manner readily understood.
The cap or tip-protector maybe formed from a blank, the shape of which is shown in Fig. 4, 01 forming the apex, and e the open end, which is folded in a manner to bring the edges ff together. v
When the cigar is manufactured this cap is put on and the cigar is sold in this shape, the purchaser withdrawing the cap and throwing it away. Thus an ordinary cigar provided with this tip -protector and piercer constitutes a new article of manufacture.
The advantages of this device are: the pin serves to pierce the end of the cigar, while the cap prevents thewrapper on the end from nnrolling, and protects the end from inj ury otherwise; it is ornamental; and, when the cigar is about to be lighted by the smoker, the cap serves as a ready means for the removal of the pin.
Furthermore, a special advantage is that thepin and cap, having been adj ustedupon the cigar in the green state, or immediately after its manufacture, the pin remains in position while the cigar seasons, whereby it follows that upon the removal of the device the perforation is found to be clear, and will remain open, enabling the cigar to be smoked without cutting off the tip. Thus a cigar provided with this combined device and sold as one article has advantages not aflorded by any mere tip-protector or separate perforator.
Having described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent The new article of manufacturea cigar having its tip or month end provided with the combined protecting-cap b and piercing-pin c, as set forth.
