Description

Sept. 1, 1931. HUGHES ATTACHMENT FOR CIGARETTES Filed March 26. 1930 gmw/wboz James 1715397265 Patented Sept. 1, 1931 UETED STATES JAMES F. HUGHES, OF NEW vYURK, N.- Y.
ATTACHMENT FOR CIGARETTES Application filed March 26, 1930. 7 Serial No. 439,167.
The present invention relates to attachments for cigarettes and consists in the com binations and arrangements of elements hereinafter described and particularly set forth in the accompanying claims.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a device which will effectively prevent the tobacco fibres of the cigarette from entering the mouth and which will offer not the least inconvenience or hindrance to the pleasure of smoking. The article is furthermore of the utmost simplicity and in its use is absolutely concealed from view.
A further object is in having the article of such structure that it may be incorporated into the body of the cigarette during manufacture, or may equally well be designed as a separate and independent device to be conveniently applied to the cigarette at the time of smoking and thereafter removed and again used with other cigarettes at will.
The invention also contemplates providing a device of this character including in its structure an element which will act to quench or put-out the burning of the cigarette at predetermined point and thereby avoid the likelihood of causing fire as frequently happens when butts of smoking cigarettes are carelessly thrown to the ground, as will be understood.
The invention is shown by way of illustration in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a cigarette with the article attached.
Figure 2 is a similar view of aslightly modified construction.
Figure 3 a longitudinal sectional view thereof, and;
Figure 4 a perspective view showing the details of actual construction of the article.
Referring to the construction in further detail and wherein the same reference characters designate corresponding parts in the different figures, 5 represents an ordinary cigarette to the end 6 of which is adapted to be attached to the device shown herein. This end of the cigarette is in no way altered whether the device be incorporated in the cigarette when made or applied thereto as a separate attachment. The device may be of large or smaller size accordingly as the smoker desires to puif lightly or inhale deeply and fully, as will be understood.
At the end 6 of the cigarette is a disc-lik piece 7 of relatively thin and non-inflammable material. Said end piece is permanently fixed to the outer end of a wire or strand 8 whose inner end is provided with abarb 9 having for its object to hold the wire Sand cap-piece 7 in position when inserted as shown. It will be understood that the Wire and its connecting cap-piece may be incorporated intothe cigarette during the process of manufacture or separately attached thereto by the smoker and detached when the cigarette has been consumed.
The invention further proposes to include in the article an element which will act to extinguish or put out the fire of the cigarette at a predetermined point. That is to say, it is designed to extinguish the fire of the cigarette in the event such fire has not been extinguished before the butt is thrown to the ground, which as well known is a habit of careless smokers. To accomplish this result it is proposed to have attached to the wire 8 a member 10 which inherently will act to put out the fire or said article may contain a suitable chemical substance which when reached by the fire of the tobacco will instantly 0p-, erate to perform its function and extinguish the same.
The construction shown in Figure 2 is in all respects the sameas in Figure l excepting that in this instance the disc 11 is smaller than the disc member 7. That is to say, the construction shown in Figure 2 is better adapted to those smokers who inhale deeply while the form shown in Figure 1 may be preferred by those who pull lightly.
The device is shown herein as applied to a cigarette but it will be understood of course that it may be equally as well used on a cigar of the usual kind, or of the smaller size.
It. is also to be understood that the invention is not limited to the details of construction here shown and described, but that these may be varied widely without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the claims.
What is claimed as new is: 1. The combination with a clgarette, of a 7 disc member partially closing an end thereof,
and a pin penetrating the cigarette body and having a substance. thereon adapted to extinguish the fire at a predetermined point, said disc member adapted to prevent the tobacco fibres from entering the mouth, substantially as set forth. 7
2. A device of the character described comprising a pin having a prong at one end adapted to be inserted into the body of a cigarette, a substance on the pin adjacent the prong to extinguish the fire at a predetermined point, and a disc member held by the pin to partially close the cigarette end and prevent the tobacco fibres from entering the mouth, substantially as set forth.
3. A device of the character described comprising a pin having abarbed end adapted to be inserted into the body of a cigarette, and a non-inflammable disc member held by the pin to partially close the cigarette end and prevent the tobacco fibres from entering the mouth, substantially as set forth.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Miami, Florida, this 4th day of March, A. D. nineteen hundred and thirty. JAMES F. HUGHES.
