To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that l, lVILLiAn E, BOSTICK, citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster andState of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Tips, of which the following is a specification.

In the manufacture of cigars, as heretofore practiced, the tip end of the wrapper is secured around the filler by means of paste which is applied thereto by the fingers of the cigar maker, the paste ordinarily contained in a pot on the cigar makers bench. This method is manifestly very unhygienic and uncleanly, as the cigar makers fingers are ordinarily applied repeatedly to the paste pot and then to the cigars one after another to spread the paste around the tip, and the paste receptacle itself will evidently become more or less foul in time, no particular pains being taken in the actual manufacture to maintain cleanly conditions, and as a matter of fact the paste itself being very often impregnated with licorice or some other coloring matter so as to partake of the hue or color of the tobacco leaf, the very nature of the coloring matter itself giving to the paste a shade where any dust or the like would not show.

\Vith such conditions in mind, my invention comprehends a more cleanly 'and hygienic method or means for holding the wrapper securely around the tip end of a cigar, and my invention has for its object a co1n paratively cheap, simple and ellicient device in the nature of a cone-like cigar tip that is adapted to be slipped over the end of the cigar around the wrapper, said tip being provided with spurs or the like which penetrate the wrapper and filler and hold the device on the cigar until the cigar is desired for use, whereupon the smoker may easily detach the metallic tip.

The invention also consists in certain constructions and arrangements of parts of the said cigar tip, which I shall hereinafter fully describe and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.

For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

In its completed form, my improved cigar tip comprises a cone-like structure 1 which is adapted to be slipped over the tip of a cigar and which is provided with any desired number of spurs 2 which project inwardly and which are designed to penetrate the wraper and filler so as to secure the wrapper around the filler at the tip end of the cigar and at the same time secure the structure or tip device 1 on the cigar.

Preferably the cone 1 is formed of a blank such as that shown in Fig. 3, the outer end being more or less ornamented by curved or pointed edges or flutes or by any other desired marginal configuration, and the said blank may be stamped out and struck up by a single operation with the spurs 2 punched out of the metal or material itself. At the same time, the locking tongue 4: may be formed on one of the two converged side edges of the blank, an opening 5 being simultaneously formed near the opposite side edge to receive the tongue so that the tongue may be passed through the opening and bent over against the cone when the device is wrapped around the cigar By the provision of this tongue 4 and its corresponding opening 5, it is evident that in the practical operation of the device, the blank may beformed for use either partially rolled or in a flat state, and as it is formed of metal or material that may be easily rolled or bent, the workman may readily wrap the device completely around the tip end of the cigar and pass the tongue through the opening 5 and bend the tongue back upon the cone thus formed, the wrapping action serving to cause the penetration of the spurs 2 in the cigar. The degree of convergence of the side edges is, of course, immaterial, as is also the size of the device, various changes clearly coming within the scope of my invention, being requisite in order that the device may be formed for cigars of different shapes and thicknesses at the tip end. It is also manifest that any desired metal or other material may be used out of which to construct my improved cigar tip. By the use of this device, the tip end of the cigar itself may be formed either in a sharp point or otherwise as the taste or udgment of the manufacturer may dictate, and the cone may be slipped along the cigar to different points so that the tip of the cigar itself may project more or less through the smaller opening of the cone, if desired.

From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that I have provided a very cheap and simple device for holding the wrapper around the tip of a cigar, said device partaking in no wise of the unhygienic conditions set forth at the outset of this specification, but being cleanly and clearly avoiding all chance of carrying contagion to the smokers mouth.

It is obvious that my improved cigar tip 1 may be used to display the name of the brand of cigars to which the tip may be applied, as well as the name of the manufacturer or distributer, in lieu of the ordinary paper I band now commonly employed for advertismg purposes, thereby effecting a saving which will compensate for the use of the improved tip.

Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is:

As a new article of manufacture, the herein described cigar tip, consisting of a sheet of l material initially formed with converging I side edges and with a tongue at one edge and an opening near the other edge and formed I with a series of spurs, the said strip being der signed to be wrapped around the tip end of a I cigar and the tongue being adapted for insertion through the opening so that it may be bent against the outer side of the sheet, the spurs being adapted to penetrate the cigar whereby to hold the wrapper to the filler and the device on the end of the cigar.
