Description
UNrrsn Smarts in; b. ltOSENBAUM,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CIGAR-TIP.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 348,347, dated August 31, 1886. Applicaiion filed December 17, 1885. Serial No. 185,897. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, Anne S. ROSENBAUM, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cigar-Tip, of which the following is a full, clear, and me act description.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap and practical tip for cigars to prevent the nicotine from entering the mouth of the smoker.
The invention consists of the combination of parts, including their construction, substantiall y as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
Refereneeis to be nad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
igure 1 shows a cigar provided with my new tip, the cigar being partly broken away and the tip shown in section. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the completed tip.
Fig. 3 shows the blank of sheet metal out 0t which the tip is formed. Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation of a modified form of tip, and Fig. 5 shows another modification provided with a plate for retaining the nicotine absorbent, and Fig. 6 is a plan view of the blank for forming the same.
A represents the tip formed with the penetrating-points a, for attaching it to the end of the cigar B.
The form of tip shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is made of a blank of sheet metal cut in the form shown in Fig. 3, in which it is shown in the flat state. The blank is first perforated with numerous holes, I), and then is ramped up to form a cup, 0, the po has a being bent to stand parallel with each other directly out from the edge of the cup, In the cup 0 is placed a small quantity, 0', of cotton, sponge, or other materiahthrough which the smoke is drawn in smoking the cigar.
In the form of tip shown in Fig. 4 the cup portion 0 is formed with an inwardly-projecting flange, (Z, formed by folding over the edge of the cup, so the flange serves to retain the cotton or other absorbent, c,in place in the tip.
In the form of tip shown in Figs. 5 and .6 thecup portion is formed or provided with a retaining-plate, c, for holding the absorbent material in the tip. The plate 0 is perforated, and is, by preference, stamped in one piece with the blank, as illustrated in Fig. 6, so that when the cotton or other absorbent is placed in the tip the plate 0 has simply to be folded over to close the cup portion of the tip, as shown clearly in Fig. 5.
In use the tip may be attached to the cigar in the process of manufacturing the cigar, in which case the formation of a tip with the wrapper is avoided, the metal tip taking its place. Instead of this the tip may be applied by consumers after the tip end of the cigar has been cut off. In whatever manner applied, the tip prevents the nicotine from entering the mouth of the smoker, and it in no manner interferes with the draft of the cigar.
The tip is very cheap, and may be made of metal, hard rubber, celluloid, or any other suitable material.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The tip A, comprising the perforated cup 0 and penetrating-points a, in combination with the perforated cover a, substantially asdescribed.
