H. D. BURNS.
TOBACCO CASE.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 4, 19.14. l 1,129,636. Patented Feb; 23, 1915.
HUGH D. BURNS, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TOBACCO-CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 23, 1915.
Application filed June 4, 1914. Serial No. 842,930.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, I-IUGH D. BURNS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvements in rIobacco- Cases; and I do hereby declare that the following description of my said invention, taken in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawings, forms a full, clear, and exact specification, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates generally to improvements in a tobacco case, and it consists, essentially, in the novel and peculiar combination of parts and details of construction, as hereinafter first fully set forth and described and then pointed out in the claims.
In the sheet of drawings already referred to, which serves to illustrate my said invention more fully, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof showing the case in open position. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section in line 3--3 of Fig. 1. Fig. l is a plan of the device showing a modified form of closure therefor. Fig. 5 is a partial section of a fragment in line 5 5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a similar section disclosing another form of closure. Fig. 7 is a plan of a fragment of the case showing the closure in. a slightly different position. Fig. 8 is a lateral section in line 8 8 of Fig. 7. Fig. 9 is a like section denoting a modification in construction. Fig. 10 is an elevation of the locking clip employed.
Like parts are indicated by corresponding characters and symbols of reference in all the figures of the drawing.
All smokers of individually or personally made cigarettes who carry about in the pockets of their clothing the makings thereof, are aware of the annoyance occasioned by the leakage of tobacco from the small sacks in which the same is usually marketed into the pockes in the clothing of the wearer. And, again, the unhandiness of releasing the drawstring contracting the mouth of these sacks with one hand, while holding a strip of cigarette paper in the other and discharging suflicient tobacco from the sack to prepare a cigarette, is well known to all users of these articles.
It is therefore the object of my invention to provide a neat pocket case for the reception of a sack of tobacco, which case has means therein for engaging the mouth of said sack, an outlet therefrom, and a finger operated closure for said outlet, whereby the necessity of releasing and contracting the mouth of the sack every time it is desired to prepare a cigarette is entirely eliminated and all leakages of tobacco into the pockets prevented.
In the practice of my invention I provide a flat, preferably rectangular open topped tray A, drawn from a flat blank of sheet metal, which tray has along one of its longitudinal edges a series of hinge earsor lugs 10. Said tray is of a size only .sufliciently large to receive a filled sack of tobacco,- which sacks are now of standard dimensions,-and of a depth of one half the thickness of said sack. Engaging (by means of a pintle l1) said hinge ears 10, are similar hinge ears 12 formed on one longitudinal edge of a duplicate tray B. This tray is a true duplicate of tray A and is produced in the same die. rIo the inner face of the opposite longitudinal wall 13 of tray B is fixed a locking spring 14:, which spring has a lip 15, projecting through a suitable opening to the exterior of said wall, and an opening 16 engaging, when said trays are closed together in an obvious manner, a protuberance 17 on the inner face of longitudinal wall 18 of tray A to maintain said trays in locked position.
Produced in the upper walls 19 and 20 are coinciding semi-circular cut outs 21, forming when the trays are closed together a circular opening, and fitting the cut out 21 of the tray A, and fastened therein is an inwardly extending tube 22, having an upper marginal Hange 2S resting upon the exterior face of wall 19, and an outwardly flared lower end 24, adapted to engage the mouth of a tobacco sack S, the drawstring of said sack being intended to be drawn tightly and tied around said tube as evidenced in Fig. 2. To the marginal flange 23 of the tube 22 is pivoted in a horizontal plane a disk like closure 25, which is possessed of a downwardly extending protuberance 26 engaging an indentation 27 on fiange 23 when said disk is closing the outlet of said tube.
Fixed to the bottom of tray A adjacent the lower edge thereof are sharp upstanding prongs 2S intended to penetrate the sack S and maintain the same in extended position when partially emptied.
It will now be observed that this device will eliminate all of the annoyances hereinbefore referred to. rThe case may be held in one hand and the closure manipulated by one of the lingers of said hand while the other hand holds a strip of cigarette paper. The device is intended to be nicely finished and when produced in quantity forms a neat, cheap, and eflicient smokers accessory.
In Figs. 4 and 5, I have indicated the closure 25 as being hinged to the flange 23 and closed by a spiral spring 80. In'Fig. 6 I show a screw threaded closure for the tube 22. In Figs. 7 and 8 I disclose various modes of fastening the tube to the tray A, and also indicate the elimination of the flange 23, in which instance the closure is hinged to the tray A., and in Fig. 9 I illustrate another mode of fastening said tube. In the construction shown in plan in Fig. 7 and in section in Fig. S, I produce notched protuberances on the upper edge of the tube 22 which protuberances fit into corresponding notches in the cut-outs 2l and in Fig. 9 the tube is simply soldered to one of the trays axially with the cut-outs. All these modifications are to be understood as coming within the scope of my invention, and I reserve the right to make such other changes and modifications as might occur to the skilled mechanic or permitted under the doctrine of equivalents.
Having thus fully described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure to myself by Letters Patent of the United States l. In combination, a tray having an opening in one of its walls thereof, an open ended tubular member extending inwardly of said tray and lixed thereto coincidently with said opening, said member having its inner end adapted to receive thereover, the open mouth of a tobacco sack or the like, located within said tray, a cover for said tray, and a closure for saidopening.
2. In combination, a tray having an opening in one of its walls thereof, an open ended tubular member extending inwardly of said tray and'ixed thereto coincidently with said opening, said member having its inner end flared outwardly and adapted to receive thereover, the open mouth of a tobacco sack or the like, located within said tray, a cover for said tray, and a closure for said opening.
3. A tobacco case including a pair of hinged together trays adapted to be closed together and locked, there being coinciding cut outs in said trays forming an outlet from the interior of said case, an inwardly extending tubular member fixed to one of said trays axially with said cut out and embraced by the other of said cut outs, said member having a flared out lower end, and a closure for said member.
4. In combination, a tray having an opening in one of its walls thereof, an open ended tubular member extending inwardly of said tray, having its outer end fixed in said opening and partially embraced thereby, the inner end of said member being adapted to receive thereover, the open mouth of a tobacco sack or the like, located within said tray, a cover for said tray having a cut out partially embracing said tubular member,
and a closure for said opening.
5. In combination, a tray having an open* ing in one of its walls thereof, an open ended tubular member extending inwardly of said tray, having its outer end fixed in said opening and partially embraced thereby, the inner end of said member being flared outwardly and adapted to receive thereover. the open mouth of a tobacco sack or the like, located within said tray, a cover for said tray having a cut out partially einbracing said tubular member, and a closure for said opening.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
