MA'rcn-BoxjAnn BLANK THEREFOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 29, 1908.
Application filed April 11, 1908. Serial No. 426,423.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL W. CARR, a citizen of the United States, resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes and Blanks Therefor, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
The annexed drawings and the following description set forth in detail, one mechanical form detail construction being but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawings, Figure I repre sents a plan view of the blank from which my improved match-box is formed; Fig. II, a side view of the closed match-box; Fig. III, a side view of the match-box, opened, and Fig. IV, a longitudinal section through the sides and top and bottom of the closed match-box.
The subject-matter of my present invention is a combined match-box and cigarcutter, formed from one piece of sheet-metal, stamped and bent and formed into a box having a spring-lid provided with a cutter which severs the tip of the cigar when the lid 1s sprung 0 en.
The b an; from which the match-box is formed and which is illustrated in Fig. I, is preferably stamped from apiece of sheetmetal so as to form the two sides, 1 and 2, of the box, with semicircular upper edges, 3 and 4, and connected by a narrow side-portion 5. The side, 2, has a narrow bottom, 6, and a narrow side-portion 7, which is extended tangential to the semicircular upper edge to form the lid-portion, 8, the outer edge of which is formed with an ear, 9, circular in outline and formed with a central opening, 10, the edge of which is sharpened to form a cutting edge, 11 when the blank is finished to be folded into the shape of the com lete box. When the blank has been folded a ong the edges of the side-pieces on the dotted lines shown in Fig. I, into the shape of the box illustrated in the other three figures, and the meeting edges of the sides and narrow side or edge portion have been united by and the box has thus embodying the invention; suchbeen completed, the outer end of the strip, 8 is bent back upon itself and again bent forward, as indicated at 12 in Fig. III, to form a catch-lip, 13, which may engage the upper end of the narrow edge-portion 5, this lid-strip may be bent to correspond to the semicircular edges of the side-pieces, the catch-lip may engage the edge-portion, and the perforated ear with its sharpened cuttingopening will register with an opening, 14, in the outer portion of the side piece 1. The outer face of this latter side has a roughened portion, 15, upon which the matches may be struck;
In practice, after the box has been completed as above stated, and suitably plated or otherwise finished as to surface according to need and desire, the box may be filled with matches and its lid closed and held closed by the catch-lip 13, as above described. When it is desired to clip the tip of a cigar and to extract a match from the box to light the cigar, the tip of the cigar is inserted into the opening in the side of the box and the doubled end of the lid-strip is pushed upward so as to release its lip from the edge portion of the box, which will cause said strip which is possessed of a sufiicient amount of spring, to fly outward and straighten out, as illustrated in Fig. III, cutting 0d the tip of the cigar and ejecting it in its outward motion and, at the same time, giving access to the matches in the box, when a match may be extracted, the lid again closed and secured and the match struck and lighted upon the roughened side of the box.
By this construction I obtain a combined match-box and cigar-cutter of exceedingly simple construction, which may be made from one piece of sheet-metal, and which is strong and durable while inexpensive of manufacture. The box may be either made from sheet-metal possessed of or capable of having imparted to it sufiicient spring to cause the lid-strip to operate as described, or the lid-strip may be made from a separate piece of spring-metal, although I prefer to make the entire box from one piece of sheetmetal, as above described.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed for the mode herein explained. Change may therefore be made as regards the mechanism thus disclosed, provided the principles of construclidtion set forth respectively in the following claims are employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention 1. A blank for a match-box consisting of one piece of sheet-metal cut to form two side-portions connected by a narrow edge portion and one of said side-portions having a bottom-piece and a narrow edge-portion extended to form a lid-strip formed with a perforated car on one side edge.
2. A match-box composed of two sideportions having semicircular ends and having an opening in one of said ends, an integral edge-strip connecting two edges of the side-portions, an integral bottom-strip at the lower end of one of the sic e-portions, and a lid-strip extending from the upper end of one of the edge-strips and having its free end doubled to form a catch-lip adapted to engage the upper end of the opposite edgestrip and formed with a perforated cuttingear on one side-edge bent at a right angle to tie strip to register with the opening in the side-portion when the lid is curved down and secured.
J 3. A match-box composed of two sideportions having semicircular ends and hav- 1 ing an opening in one of said ends an integral edge-strip connecting two edges of the sideportions, an integral bottom-strip at the lower end of one of the side-portioi'ls, and a I lid-strip extending from the upper end of one 1 of the edge-strips and integral with the same I and having its free end doubled to form a catch-lip adapted to engage the upper end of f the opposite edge-strip and formed with a 1 perforated cutting-ear on one side-edge bent at a right angle to the strlp to register with the opening in the side-portion when the .4
lid is curved down and secured.
I In testimony that I claim the foregoing-1o I be my invention I have hereunto set my hand I this 24 day of March A. n. 1905.
