UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. PIERCE, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
COMBINED MATCH-BOX AND CIGAR-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,056, dated January 10, 1882.
Application filed July 22, 1881.
citizen of the United States, residing in the cityand county of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Combined Match-Box and Cigar-Cutter, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a pocket match-box which is provided with a knife for cutting off the pointed cigar end, the cutting-knife and the cover of the box being both acted upon by a spring in such manner that opening and closing the cover actuates the knife-blade, and
provided, further, with means to puncture the cigar end, if that is preferable to cutting it ofi, and with a pin-cushion. 0n theinner side of the box-cover is a serrated plate for igniting the matches. The spring which actuates the co\ er and cutting-blade I make of sufiicient length, so that while one end of it engages the box-cover the other end is fashioned to form the fastening-catch of the box.
The detail of construction and of arrangement of the several parts is more fully shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are elevations, showing the box' closed and open. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the box. Fig. 4 shows the serrated plate on the inner under side of the box-cover. Fig. 5 is a vertical central section, showing the several parts in detail. Figs. 6 and 7 are different views of the spring and cutter-blade. Fig. 8 is a vertical central section of the puncturing device on the line m or.
Similar letters denote like parts in all the drawings. g V
The box B maybe of any desired shape, and may be drawn up from a single piece of metal, or it may be made in parts and soldered together. The box is divided into three compartments, as shown in Fig. 5, to afford a receptacle for matches, a chamber for a pin cushion, c, and one for the puncturing device d.
At any convenient point in the side of the box B, I locate an orifice, e, the edges of which, with the cuttingblade hereinafter described, form the cutter for taking ott' the pointed cigar ends.
The cover C is actuated bya spring, 8, which preferably I make of sufficient length and suitable shape to form also the catch or locking device 8 for the box-cover. To this spring s, at the proper point,I attach a cutting-blade, b, so that when the spring is in its normal po- (No model.)
sition the blade covers the orifice 6; but when the cover is closed down upon the box the blade moves with the spring, so as to uncover the orifice, and remains in that position so long as the box is closed. The spring .9 is" C also provided Wltllit start or thumb piece, 8 which extends outwardly through the box to afford means of operating the spring-catch s. The spring s is made to engage the'cover on its inner under side, at some convenient point near its hinge-joint, so as to throw the cover back when the catch s is disengaged by the pressure upon the start 8 The puncturing device (shown in detail in Fig. 8) consists of a movable plate, (I, provided with one or more orifices, and resting upon a coil-spring, and one or more vertical needles, a a, so placed that as the plate at is pressed down upon the spring the needle-points will protrude through the orifices in said plate and puncture the cigar end. This device is intended more especially for use when the cigar has what is known as a short-filling, and it is not desirable to cut the wrapper on the end.
The plate is made with a central orifice, also large enough to receive the pointed cigar end,
and so serve as a guide in puncturing.
The pin-cushion c fills the third chamber in the box, and projects slightly beyond the edge of the box, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 5.
In operating, the pointed cigar and is inserted in the orifice e, and the start 8? being pressed releases the cover C and allows the spring 8 to resume its normal position, in doing which it forces the cutting-blade I) quickly across the orifice e and cuts off the cigar end. If it is desired to puncture the cigar, the end is inserted in the central orifice of the plate d,and, being pressed down, carries the plate down a sufiicient distance to force the cigar onto the needle-points a a.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a match-box, the box B, provided with an orifice, e, and combined with a cover, C, a'
