Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. SWIFT, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Tip Cutters, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to certain improvements in cigar-tip cutters, the object being to provide a simple and inexpensively produced article of the general character or type referred to in which the movable cutter member is accurately guided and easily operated, while at the same time being comparatively light, strong and less liable to become accidentally inoperative. The device is adapted to be carried in the pocket or worn as a charm detachably connected to the watch or key-chain of the user.

In the accompanying'sheet of drawings illustrating my improved device constructed for cutting the tips of cigars, Figure 1 is a front elevation showing the article in the normally open position, portions being broken away; Fig. 2 is a corresponding vertical edge view; Fig. 3 is a front view showing the movable cutter in the depressed or closed position; Fig. 4 is a vertical central section taken on line 4 4: of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a horizontal cross-section, enlarged, taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 3; Fig. 6 is a horizontal cross-section, taken on line 66 of Fig. 3; Figs. 7 8 and 9, are detail views of the central tubular cap member constructed to receive the retracting spring and adapted to be secured to the shank of the movable cutter element; and Fig. 10 is a front view of the movable cutter itself.

Again referring to the drawings, A indicates the device, complete, formed of suitable metal. The elements or parts comprising my improved cigar-tip cutter may be described as follows: A relatively stationary apertured flat back or body a is provided with oppositely arranged integral vertical guides a and having its upper portion terminating in the hollow elongated central vertical neck ortion Z2 6 A thin, flat cutter element is provided with a concave knife edge 0 on its enlarged lower part 0 and slidably guided in said guides a From the upper portion extends a vertical central rectangular shaped part 0 arranged to slide in opposite guides a formed in said neck; the part 0 has an elongated central opening 0 therethrough to receive a light helical spring 8. The central cap-tube cl,having its lower end open, has its walls provided with diametrically opposed slots 8 extending throughout its length, arranged to receive and overlie the respective vertical inner edges of the said opening 0 the spring 8 is located in the tube at, one end of the spring bearing against the cross-tie c of the opening, while its opposite or lower end rests on the bottom of the recess 8 of the tubular portion 1) of the said central neck part of the body a. The tube d has a flat cap or flange al secured to it, the shape of the flange conforming substantially to that of the end of the open neck 6 6 The cutter C is first inserted and moved vertically in the frame or body a, the outer edges of parts 0 and 0 at the same time being laterally guided by and in sliding engagement with the corresponding vertical inner grooves a a of the main member. The upper portion 0 of cutter C, upon extending through the hollow neck, in thus assembling the parts, receives the positioned spring 8 in the opening 0 the lower portion of the spring then bearing in the recess 8 as before stated. The capped tube 05 is next inserted over the upper portion 0 of the cutter and spring, guided by the slots 3 The construction being such that the lower end of tube d enters the recess-guide s before the cutter reaches its upward limit of movement, thereby constituting an auxiliary centralizing guide. When the end of the neck and underside of flange 65 are in engagement the holes d and 0 thereof register with each other so as to allow the insertion of a rivet or pin p, thereby securing the parts in normal working position, the cutter and tube then being capable of moving as one in the respective guides. After inserting the cutter in the frame a the lower end of the latter is inturned to form a fingerprotecting flange a It will be seen, referring to Fig. 4, that the back of the cutting edge 0 of the cutter is positioned contiguous to the face of the companion opening it of the stationary member, so that as the cutter is moved downwardly it is adapted to sever the tip end of a cigar held in opening 72., the line of severance having somewhat the nature of a shearing out. In normal cutting action the force or pressure is applied at diametrically opposite points, substantially as indicated by the dotted line arrows in Fig. 3. Upon removing said pressure therefrom the reaction of the com ressed s rin returns the V P P g the upward movement of the cutter.

The device may be readily adapted to be Worn on a vest-chain or key-chain by simply providing it with an eye or ring r to which latter the chain may be attached.

' What I claim as an improved construction b anddesire tosecure by Letters Patent, is

1. A cigarcutter device comprising an apertured, relatively stationary body'member having a comparatively wide lower portion provided with oppositely disposed vertical guides, the upper portion of said. body being extended and constituting a central hollow neck of reduced width, a longitudinally movable cutter member having its lower portion mounted in said guides, the cutter member also having an apertured upper extension movably supported and guided in said hollow neck, a tube fixed to said extension of the cutter and extending down- .ward into said hollow neck, and a central spring mounted andconcealed in said tube and neck parts, arrangedto return the cut- ',ter to its normal open position.

2. In a cigar-cutter, the combination of the apertured, substantially flat body memher having a recessed hollow neck extension, a cutter member movably mounted and guided'in said body, said cutter having an upper extension part mounted in said neck portion, sald extension part of the cutter having an elongated opening therein, a,

capped central tube fixed to the upper end of the cutter, the wall of said tube being oppositely slotted to receive the adjacent inner edges of the said elongated opening and also arranged to enter and be centrally supported and guided in said recessed portion of the neck, and a protected spring mounted in said tube and recess.

3. In a cigar cutter, a body member having side guides and its lower end turned outwardly, said body member being reduced in width at one end to provide a tubular neck portion, a blade slidably mounted in the guides and having a reduced upper end provided with a longitudinal opening and projecting beyond said neck portion, a tubular cap having a closed outer end and diametrically opposed slots to be received on the reduced end of the blade, and an expansion coil spring positioned in the blade opening engaging at its outer end the closed end of the cap and at its inner end the body neck.

In a cigar cutter, a body member, a reduced neck portion carried by the body member, a blade slidably mounted therein, the upper end of said blade being reduced in Width and having a longitudinal opening therein, a tubular cap secured on the reduced end of the blade, and a coil spring received in said blade opening and cap engaging the cap at one end and the body member at the other end.
