Description
UNITED STATES .PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB UNGERER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
`clem-,PIERCING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part -of Letters Patent No. 297,956, dated April 29, 1884.
Application nien september 1r, 1583. (No model.)
To aZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, J AcoB UNGEEER, a citizenof the United States, residing at Newark. in the county of Essex and Srtate of. New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Im-` s provements in Devices for Piercing Cigars;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,'and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
The object of Athis invention is to provide more perfect means for piercing cigars, so that the smoke may be drawn-therethrough with greater ease than when pierced with a simple needle, said needle tending to close the pores of the cigarfand without breaking or cutting the cigar to such an extent as to cause the to'- Joacco thereof to be drawn into the mouth when smoking, as is now the case when the end of the cigar is cut off by the ordinary cutters.
'Ihe invention consists in the arrangement and combination of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the claim. f
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the figures, Figure l is an enlargrd longitudinal sectional view of my combined piercing device and watch-chain bar, and Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same.
In carrying out theinvention I form a watchchain bar with a ring secured thereto, adapted to link with the watch-chain. said bar being formed of a slotted tube, a. Within said tube I secure a longitudinal and stationary bar, b, around which is arrangeda sliding tubular cutter, c, capable of cut-ting a hole into the| cigar and withdrawing the tobacco therefrom. Said tubular cutter is connected with a fingerpiece, d, which in the case shown is a sliding collar working on the tubular case a, a slot in said case limiting the action ofthe fingerpiece. By projecting the tubular cutter forward and thrusting the same into the cigar a hole is made therein, the 4tobacco from which lodges in the interior of the said cutter. When the latter is again drawn back into its receptacle over the central bar, said bar clears vthe said tube of the tobacco lodged therein preparatory to a subsequent piercing process.
I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact shape of the tubular cutter, as the Same may be other than round, nor
to theexact arrangement of parts herein shown;
and, further, instead of adapting the piercer to be also employed as a watch-chain bar, as
shown, it may be connected with a knife or any other'article suitable to be carried around or upon the person.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- .A
The combination ofthe case, a center bar arranged therein and fixed in its relation thereto, a sliding tubular cutter working betweenthe bar'and case, and a finger-piece arranged outside the case and connected to the cutter, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 7th day of September, 1883.
JAcoE UNGEREE.
