Description

W. 1.;WINNE. Device for Fastening Barrel Heads and Covers.
, No. 205,226. Patented June 25,1878.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
WILLIAM I. \VINNE, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK..
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR FASTENING BARREL HEADS AND COVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,226, dated June 25, 1878 application filed November 9, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM I. WINNE, of the city and county of Albany, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Device for Fastening the Heads and Hoops of Barrels, of which the following is a full and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device; and Fig. 2, a sectional View of part of a barrel, showing the mode of applying the said device.
My invention consists of a metallic bar bent into the form shown in the drawings, by means of whiehthe heads and chine-hoops are secured, in the manner herein set forth.
As shown in the drawings, A is the fasten in g device, made of a bar of metal (commonly of iron wire) sharpened at both ends, bent in manufacturing at 1, 2, and 3, to form the divisions a, b, c, andd, for the following purposes: In applying the fastening, the point a is first driven into the head of the barrel, so that the part b will lie flat upon the head. The part c is then bent over the chine of the barrel, and the point (I driven through the chine-hoops into the staves, thereby holding all these parts of the barrel securely together.
By using this fastening the necessity for lining hoops for the heads of barrels is dispensed with, and the splitting of the heads and staves incident to the removal of such hoops entirely avoided.
I claim as my invention As anew article of manufacture, a det'ice for securing the heads and hoops of barrels, consisting of a metallic bar, bent, as shown in the drawing, at 1, 2, and 3, to form the divis ions at, b, c, and d, as and for the purpose herein specified.
WILLIAM I. WINNE. Witnesses:
