Description
` s. BLACK.l Door-Latch.
No. 202,404. V Patented Aprn16',1ss7 8.y
'UNI-TED STATES PATENT OFF-ICE.
SAMUEL BLACK, OF UNIONGROVE, IOWA..
IM PROVEM ENT IN DOOR-LATCHES.
` Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,404, dated April 16, 1878; application filed June 9, 1877.-
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL BLACK, of Union Grove, in the county of Page and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Latches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in door-latches; and consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, and set forth in the claims heretol anneXed.
The accompanying drawing is an elevation of a latch and lock with 011e side of the case removed to show the working parts, and embodies my invention.
Referring to the parts by letters, Arepresents a metallic case, in which the operating parts are seated.' B is the latch-bar, formed of two parallel bars, B B", united at one end by a bar, B". The bar B is pivoted to the case A at the outer end of the bar B', at b, so that the force of graiity of the bar B will swing its latch end B outward through a prepared opening in the case A, as shown by full lines in the drawing. b' is an openin g in the bar B. C is a cam, Xed upon a shaft, D, in the opening b', which is journaled in the case, and may be provided with a suitable handle for turning the shaft and cam, so that the cam may assume the position shown by dotted lines in the drawing, and bring the bar B into the position shown by dotted lines at saine figure, and thus retract the latch within the case.
When the handle or shaft D is released the latch B will swing into its normal position. (Shown by full lines in the drawing.)
E is a dog, which may be turned into the l position shown by the full lines in the drawing, to allow the latch B to oscillate freely, or may be turned into the position shown by dotted lines, to lock or hold the latch end Bl projected from the case A.
F is a bolt seated between the arms Bl B", and may be operated by asuitable key through hole f.
This construction of latch is cheap, and not as liable to get out of order as a spring-latch.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is-
Latch-bar B, provided with parallel bars Bl B, and with an upward extension having a V-shaped recess in its front end, in combination with casing A, slotted on top, and dog E, having a handle which extends up through said slot, the locking-dog being shaped soas to engage with the Vshaped recess in said upward extension, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL BLACK.
