' Patented Deo; 4, 1883.

mienralinnn- WIIJVESSES tion/Ley UNITED STATES PATENT EFICE- FREDERICK J. LEE, OE OSWEGO, KANSAS.
DOOR-CATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,666, dated December 4, 1883.
Application filed September 17,1883. (Model.)
To all whom it Wray concern,.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK J. LEE, of Oswego, in the county of Labette and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Catches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a horizontal section, showing my improved catch applied to a door and `its frame. Eig. 2 is'a view of the inner side of the catch.
This invention relates to catches which are especially designed for screen-doors, but which may be used for other purposes; and it consists in apivoted hooked catch having applied to it a spring-actuated bolt, and also a locking device, as will be fully understood from the following description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings.
A designates a portion of a door, land B is part of a door-frame.
C designates the plate or frame of the catch, to which is pivoted the hook-shaped catch D, having a finger-piece on one end and a tooth, a, on the opposite end. These parts are secured to the inside of the door, which, when shut, is held by the catch D engaging with a beveled plate keeper, b, on the door-frame.
E designates atube, which is fitted in a hole through the door, and which may be secured to the frame C. In this tube is applied a bolt, E, having a notch in one end to receive the tooth a on the pivoted end of the hooked catch D, and several notches in the other end to receive a set-screw, which connects the tubular part c of a knob, G, to it, (the bolt.)
By means of the several notches in the outer end of the bolt E, the tubular knob, and the set-screw, the device is adapted for doors of different thicknesses.
Surrounding the bolt F, and inclosed in the tube E, is a helical spring, J, which operates to engage the hooked catch with its keeper b; or, in other words, the office of the spring is to force the bolt inwardly.
The plate or frame C is constructed with a guard, d, and to this plate is pivoted a locking-arm, e, having a curvedlocking end. This arm is designed for engaging with the notch in the boltF and locking the catch and door shut. By' unlatching the door and adjusting the arm e in front of the bolt, the catch is held inactive.
If the tube E is not a part of the frame C, it will have a flange on one end to prevent it from pulling through the door.
The slotted plate or frame C is put on over the flattened end of the bolt and against the flange, which of course holds fast.
The grooves in the outer end of the bolt should be deep enough to loosely receive the set-screw of the knob and allow the latter to turn freely.
Having described my invention, I claiml. The combination of the plate C, the pivoted hooked catch D, having a tooth, a, the notchedhead of the draw-bar, the casing thereof, and the spring surrounding said draw-bar, substantially as described.
2. rIhe combination of the hooked catch, the spring-actuated bolt, the plate A, having a guard on it, and the lockingarm, substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. The combination of the catch, the springactuated bolt, notched as described, the adjustable tubular knob, and the locking-arm, all
constructed and adapted to operate substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK J. LEE.
