H. E. GILMORE.
SASH LOCK.
` IJV'VENTOR Harm-Zr,
P Ef ff lNo. 320,551.
forw/M Attorney UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE E. GILMORE, OF SPRING HILL, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR-OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN S. MACKEY, OF SAME PLACE.
SASH-LOCK.
:CJPEGIFICATIONfOIming part of Letters Patent No.320,551, dated June 23, 1885.
Application filed April 27, 1855. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE E. GILMORE,
a citizen of the United States, vresiding at `Spring Hill, in the county of Johnson and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks; and I do hereby declare that the`following is a full, clear. and eXactdescription ofthe same, reference being had to t-he annexed drawings, making apart of this speciiication, and tothe Y letters and gures of reference marked there- Figure l of the drawings is a sectional side elevation ofa window-frame and sashes enr bodying my invention; Fig. 2, a perspective view of one of the casings andspring-bolts; Fig. 3, a sectional view thereof, Fig. 4,a horizontal section taken through one of the casings, to show the form ot' the bolt; and Fig. 5 is a detail view ofthe bolt.
The present invention has relation to that class ot' sash fasteners or locks in which a ratchet rod or bar is connected to the top ofthe window-frame and extends down to thetop of thelower sash, and latches or other like devices connected to each ofthe sashes operate in connection with the ratchets on the rod or bar to hold the sashes either opened or closed, as found desirable.
The object of the invention is to improve the construction of the above-mentioned class ot' sash fasteners or locks; and it consists in the details of construction substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the windowfranie, and B C thevupper and lower sashes, respectively.
To the top of the frame A is. suitably connected one end of a rod, D, provided along its length with a series of ratchet-teeth,` a.
Near the lower end of the rod D are two or more square notches, b, and a like notch at the top of the rod, as shown in dotted lines.
' The blocks or casings which contain the bolts (shown at E) areprovided with Suitable eye-plates, c, for attaching them to the tops of the sashes by screws or other similar fastenings. The casings E have a central hole, d, through which the rod D extends, so as to al- 5c low the sashes to move up and down. The casings E contain the bolts F, which are of peculiar construction, having a U -shaped end, c, entering and passing thro-ugh two'perfora tions, f, in the inner side orend of the casing.
The outer or opposite end of the bolt F is provided with a thumb-piece, g, and a coilspring encireles the bolt at this end and bears against the th amb-piece and casing. Bending the bolt F at its end, as shown at e, greatly strengthens it where most required, and the perfor-ations f give a double bearing, thus rendering the bolt more readily ope1'ated,with less liability to twist or bend out of its nor' inal position or shape.
The notches b in the rod D are for the purpose of locking the sashes when closed, while the ratchets c will admit of the sashes being raised, lout not lowered, without pressing ou the thumb-piece g ot' the bolt F, to disengage it with the rat-chets.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a window-sash lock, a vertical rod having ratchets and notches at its upper and lower ends and connected to the window-frame, in combination with suitable blocks or easings connected to the sashes and having central holes for the rod and containing a springbolt, said bolt at its inner end being U-shaped and passing through double perforations in the casing, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence S of two witnesses. y
HORACE E. GILMORE.
