UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
JOHN H. ROBINSON, OF MANCHESTER BRIDGE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BITS FOR HORSE S.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,195, dated April 9, 1878; application filed February 25, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. ROBINSON, of Manchester Bridge, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bolting and Shying Bits, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a detail section of my improved bit, takenv through the line w as, Fig. '2. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved bit, designed for use in breaking horses from bolting and shying, which shall be simple in construct-ion and efl'ective in use.
The inventioneonsists in the combination of the bars, the curved or arched springs, and the points with the mouth-piece of the bit, as hereinafter fully described.
A is the mouth-piece of the bit, to the ends of which are attached the rings B, that receive the reins. To the mouth-piece A, near its ends, are attached two cross-bars, O, which are designed to standacrossthehorselw and to which, or to the mouth-piece A, are attached loops D, for the check-straps. E are two springs, which have holes formed through their centers to receive the mouth-piece. A.
bars 0, and which pass through slots in the said springs E. To the arms of the bars '0 are attached two points, F, which are directly opposite slots in the springs E, so as to project through the slots in the springs when the said springs are compressed.
With this construction, should the horse bolt or shy while being driven, the side pressure of his head against one of the springs E will compress the said spring, and cause the points F to project through the slots of the said springs and pierce his mouth, so that after a few experiments of this kind he will give up bolting and shying, and may then be driven withan ordinary bit.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the bars 0, the curved or arched springs E, and the points F with the mouth-piece A of the bit, substantially as herein shown and described.
' JOHN H. BOBINSON.
