Description
UNITED srn'rns PATENT OFFICE.
ABASLAM GRAHAM, or MADISON, MAINE.
Application filed February 14, 1913. Serial No. 748,475.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABASLAM GRAHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Madison, in the county of Somerset and State of Maine, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bits, of which the following is. a specification.
My invention relates to a bridle bit for horses or the like, it being the object thereof to provide a bit which will positively prevent the animal from kicking while in harness.
A further object of the invention is to provide a bit of this character which is of the simplest possible construction, is very durable, and which will at the same time be very efliective in operation.
The invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference-being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the bit in use, showing the same in its normal position; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the bit operated for the purpose described, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the bit.
Referring to the drawing, it'will be seen that I have provided a bit which is simply constructed from few parts of metal, and
which may be applied readily to any ordinary form of bridle such as shown at 1.
In constructing the bit in accordance with my invention, the mouth bar 2 having the centrally disposed, upwardly projecting port 3, has a cheek 4 formed on each end thereof including an elliptical ring 5 and a downwardly projecting operating arm portion 6 having anattachmg ring 7 formed on its free end. A curved chin bar 8 has its extremities slidably connected to the rearmost portions of the cheek rings 5 by means of the eyes or loops 9 formed on the ends of said bar, in order that the bar will be arranged always in a plane disposed angularly with respect to the plane of the operating arms 6.
Patented Jan. 12, 1915.
In using a bit constructed in this manner,
. the bit will be brought into engagement with the roof of the animals mouth and the chin bar 8 will be forced inwardly against the chin. This action of the bit will instantly bring the animal into upright position without permitting him to kick.
In practice it has been found that the use of a chin bar loosely attached to the rings of the bit is quite efiective in use, but it is to be understood that the chin bar may be fixedly secured to the said rings, or any other desired changes may be made in the structure of the device without departing from the scope of the invention.
Having thus describedmy invention, what I claim is: r
A bit comprising a mouth bar, a port provided upon said bar, cheek rings secured fixedly to the opposite ends of the mouth bar, radially extending operating arms formed upon the cheek rings in spaced relationto the corresponding ends of the mouth bar, and a bowed chin bar having its ends connected to the cheek rings and on the oppositeside of the operating arms with respect to the points of connection of the ends of'the mouth bar with the said rings.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of witnesses.
IDA M. GRAHAM.
