.Be it known that I, Hermon S. Source, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Bridle-Bits; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it a1 )pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in that class of bridle-bits combining therein a driving-bit and a somewhat smaller bit for checking up the horses heads.

Heretofore the driving-bit and check-bit have most generally been separate, although in some cases the said bits have been connected so as to allow a certain limited amount of independent movement, the connections being at the sides of the moutlrpieces in such a manner as that by pulling the driving-rein to any considerable extent the check-bit is at lected.

The objectof this invention is to overcome this diiliculty by doing away with the side connections and connecting the two monthpieccs at or nearly at the center, and thusallow the side sections of the driving-bit mouthpiece to move freely without being limited except indirectly and to an inconsiderable degree through the central connections. It also has for its object the reduction of friction or wear on the horses mouth, whereby said mouth is made sore, and also to guard the mouth against the action of working parts, so that the tongue or other parts of said mouth will not be caught between said parts and be cut or bruised by such action.

The invention consists in the arrangement and combinations of parts substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally be cinbodied in the clauses of the claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, lligure 1 is a plan view of a driving-bit having a check-bit movably attached thereto so as to have a lateral movement independent of the first said bit. Fig. 2 illustrates a modithe other section or the check-bit fastened to said bit A. The mid-bar, separating the portion a into two eyes, limits the longitudinal motion of the side sections, and otherwise prevents the two sections from engaging one another, and thus endangering the horse s tongue. The mid-bar may, however, be dispensed with, as in Fig. 3, and yet allow the said sections to be operated without affecting the check-bit, as will be evident. To said portion a is loosely secured the said check-bit B in any suitable manner, that preferred being as illustrated in 1, in which said double eye is shown to be provided with or have cast thereon crews, eyes, or connections I) b, which allow the said check-bit to move freely from side to side when arranged therein. The said double eye may be provided with a swivel, whereby the check-bit may be moved in any direction independent of the bit A; but I prefer the eyes shown, which, when cast, may be formed open or hook-shaped, to receive the checlebit or supplemental bar thereof, and, after the in sertion of said bit or bar be hammered down to retain said bit therein. Said check-bit may be, and preferably is, provided with a supplemental bar, 0, to receive the connectives b of the portion (I. Said supplemental bar is bent at the ends, as at (Z cl, to limit the lateral action of the checlcbit, and at said ends attached or secured to the main portion of the mouth piece, which latter forms a guard to prevent access of the horses tongue to the sliding or working connectives, whereby said tongue is prevented from being injured. The check-bit may be provided with loose rein-rings, as in Fig. 1, or with rigid ones, as in Fig. 2, and under some circumstances the supplemental bar may be dispensed with. Again, 1 may use a jointed check-bit and divide the supplel 3. In a bit, a check-bit provided with a supmental bar into two loops instead of one. I do not, therefore, wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact construction shown, as I am aware that various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the in vention.

WVhat I claiin as new is 1. The improved bridle-bit, consisting, essentially, of the bit A, having the double eye a, provided with eyes I) Z), and the bit B, having the supplemental bar, the ends of which are bent and attached to the mouth-piece of the said bit B, said parts being arranged and operating substantially as set forth.

2. A bridle bit combining therein abit with side sections connected by an eye or eyes, and free to work without affecting the checkbit, said eye or eyes having connections to receive and connect with said check-bit, and said check-bit, all said partsbeing arranged and adapted to operate substantially as and for the purposes set forth and shown.

4. In combination, a bit having a jointed mouth-piece the side sections of which are connected together at the center by a piece or portion, a, said piece or portion being loosely attached to the rigid mouth-piece of a bit, B, and said bit 13, having said rigid month-piece adapted to move or work in said portion a, the said side sections of the jointed mouthpiece being adapted to move independent of the said rigid mouth-piece, said parts being arranged and adapted to operate substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
