UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS N. FROST, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF" HIS RIGHT TO GEORGE SWAIN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOTTLE-STOPPER FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,662, dated March 26, 1878; application filed February '7, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS N. FROST, of New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in BottleStoppers; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, front view; Fig. 2, side view; Fig. 3, top or plan View. 4
This invention relates to an improvement in that class of stoppers for bottles which are hinged or hung to the bottle, and so as to be looked over the mouth; and it consists in a cover, provided with aflexible packing, hinged to the bottle so as to be turned to or from the mouth, combined with a cam pivoted to the top of the cover and working in a horizontal plane, and with hooks 011 the sides of the bottle, by which the said cam may be engaged to press and hold the cover on the mouth of the bottle, as more fully hereinafter described.
a is the cover, hinged to the bottle at one side by a fixed hinge,'b, and near the edge of the mouth of the bottle, or otherwise, and so as to rest upon the mouth, or be turned away therefrom, as seen in broken lines, Fig. 2. On the top of the cover abar, c, is centrally pivoted at d, and so as to turn to the right or left in a horizontal plane, and, as indicated in broken lines in Fig.
3, this is provided with finger-pieces e, as aoonvenience for turning it. The ends of the bar project to either side over the cover to form cams f. At each side of the bottle a hook, it, is attached, and extends up above the cover, as seen in Fig. 2, and so that the cam-shaped ends of the bar 0 may be turned beneath the hooks h, and press the cover hard down upon the mouth of the bottle. The under side of the cover is provided with a packing, i, as seen in broken lines, Fig. 2, of india-rubber or other elastic or flexible material, which Will be compressed upon the mouth of the bottle by turning the cams beneath the hooks h.
To open the bottle, simply turn the cams from beneath the hooks, and the cover is free to turn upon its hinge away from, and so as to open the mouth of, the bottle.
By attaching the cover to a fixed hinge at m the edge of the mouth it is certain to assume its proper position when turned over the mouth, and does not require the adjustment essential in other stoppers.
I claim- The combination of the cover attached to the bottle by a fixed hinge, having a soft or elastic packing upon its under side, a crossbar pivoted to said cover, with cam-shaped ends, provided with means for turning said bar, and a hook at each side of the bottle, with which the said cams will engage, substantially as described.
FRANCIS N FROST.
