SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 724,342, dated March 31, 1903.
Application filed October 1, 1902.
To (tZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM M. SHEWRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and Stateof Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Collar-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for fastoning collars to the rear of the neckband of a shirt; and the object of the invention is to provide a device which will effectually secure a collar in proper position. and prevent the rear thereof from riding up over the neckband, thus obviating much inconvenience now generally experienced With most of the fastenings now in use.
The peculiar construction of the invention will be specifically described hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a collarfastener constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of a collar, showing the fastener applied. Fig. 3 is an inside view of the collar, showing the fastener applied. Fig. 4 is a vertical crosssectional View through the collar and fastener. Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view through the collar, neckband, and fastening device. Fig. 6 is a vertical cross-sectional view through the fastening device, and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a modified form of the fastening device. a
The reference-numeral l designates an approximately rectangular plate, at the top edge of which is a laterally-extending edge flange 2, connected to or formed with an upwardlyprojecting arcuate keeper-plate 3. This plate 3 is designed to enter a pocket 4, formed in the rear of the neckband 5 of the shirt, and is arranged so that the rear edge of the pocket will rest or bear against the flange 2, which forms a shoulder to hold the plate in proper relative position.
Intermediate the ends of the rectangular plate 1 and immediately below the shoulder or flange 2 is a lateral button or headed pin 6, which is designed to enter and project through the buttonhole 7 in the rear of the collar 8, whereby the collar will be secured Serial No. 125,555. (No model.)

In the event that the collar becomes soft, due to per spiration, the buttouhole will retain its shape and the collar will be prevented from becom ing detached by a stop formed by a rearwardly-projecting flange 9, formed on the lower edge of the plate 1 and on which the lower edge of the collar 8 is design ed to bear.
In the modified form illustrated in Fig. 7 the flange 9 is dispensed with and in lieu thereof two rearwardly-projecting lugs are formed on the lower edge of the plate 1, which constitute retaining means for the collar.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that a fastening device constructed in accordance with my invention can be readily applied and will effectually secure the collar to the neckband of the shirt. I prefer to form this fastener from sheet metal or cast it of a single piece, but reserve the right to mold or compress it into form of any material which will adapt itself for the purpose.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A collar-fastener, comprising a plate having a projection at the lower end thereof, means carried by the plate for engagement with the collar, and means formed with the plate for engagement with the neckband of a shirt.
2. In a collar fastener, the combination with a plate, of an edge flange arranged at a right angle to the lower portion of the plate, means formed at the top of the plate for engaging the neckband of the shirt and a headed pin projecting from the plate and designed to engage the collar.
3. In a collarfastener, the combination with a plate having a headed pin at right angles thereto, a second plate or extension connected to the plate in a different but parallel plane, and a projection at the lower end of the plate and at a right angle thereto.
