6 Claims.
This invention relates to fiat irons and primarily to a thumb rest. The invention is especially designed for use in connection with electrically heated flat irons but obviously it is capable of being used with any type fiat irons. The principal object of the invention is to provide an improved grip for the iron, by conveniently locating a thumb rest with relation to the main handle or grip, the thumb rest being adjustable to suit different operators and it is so co-related with the main grip or handle that it can be adjusted for either a right or left handed person as well as persons with different hand characteristics. Hands diifer in shape, size, etc., so a rigid thumb rest which would conveniently accommodate one person would be unsuitable for another, consequently, I have provided means whereby a wide latitude of adjustment is capable of accommodating different personal requirements.
The novelty of the invention will be clearly understood by reference to the following description in connection with the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of an iron to which my invention is applied.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of an iron to which my invention is applied, the thumb rest being shown in full line position for a right handed operator and dotted line position for a left handed person, the handle being shown partly in section.
Figure 3 is a front View of the thumb rest, the handle and part of the handle bow, and
Figure 4 is a disassociated view of part of the bolt, one end of the bow, the thumb rest and the front end of the handle.
Referring now to the drawing by numerals of reference: I designates the main body of the iron which may be of any approved construction provided with a handle bow 2, having the upstanding ends 3 and i to which the handle 5 is secured by a bolt 6 passing thru the upper ends of the bow members 3 and 4, and thru the handle. The front bow member 3 is provided with a rectangular opening I, to receive the rectangular portion 8 on the bolt 6, so that the bolt will be held against rotation to enable the nut 9 on the end of the bolt in the recess ll] of the handle to be turned to release the bolt or to tighten it. The handle 5 is provided with a reduced or constricted portion H to be received in the recess l2 of the head S3 of the thumb rest. The head I3 is provided with a notched face M to receive the detent or pawl 15 on the front bow member 3. The head I3 is provided with an outstanding thumb receiving seat Hi.
It will be apparent that when the parts are in opposite position, it will be necessary only to loosen the nut 9 on the bolt 6 so as to withdraw 5 the detent l5 from the notched face M of the head l3 so that the thumb rest can be rotated or turned on the constricted portion ll of the handle, so as to locate the seat IS in proper position to accommodate the person using the iron, 10 then the nut 9 can be tightened on the bolt to set the parts in the desired position. The thumb rest can be swung thru a considerable are from right to left and vice versa so that it can be adjusted for either a right handed or left handed 5 person or any angle between two extremes. The flexibility of the adjustment is an important feature of my invention so I do not Wish to be limited to the exact detail of construction shown in the preferred embodiment thereof. 20
What I claim is:
1. In a flat iron, a body, a handle, a bow supporting the handle, a thumb rest at the front end of the bow mounted to swing in an are about the axis of the handle and means for holding the thumb rest rigid with respect to the handle in any of a plurality of positions with respect to the handle.
2. In a fiat iron, a body, a handle, means for connecting the handle to the body in spaced relation therewith, a reversible thumb rest associated with the handle movable about the axis of the handle and means for holding the thumb rest, in any of a number of positions between two extremes, rigid with respect to the handle.
3. In a flat iron having a handle above the body of the iron a reversible thumb rest mounted to swing about the longitudinal axis of the handle from one side of a vertical plane passing through said axis to the opposite side of the vertical plane and vice versa, and means for holding the thumb rest rigid in either of its two positions.
4. In a fiat iron a body, a handle support above the body and secured thereto, a reversible thumb rest carried by the support for the handle and having a part with detent engaging notches said thumb rest being supported to swing about the longitudinal axis of the handle in a clockwise and counterclockwise direction and a detent to engage the notches to hold the thumb rest rigid.
5. In a flat iron, a body, a handle, a bow having upstanding arms, a bolt extending through the upstanding arms and through the handle to support it, a thumb rest having swinging movement about the axis of the bolt independent of the handle and provided with a roughened face and a detent on the front arm of the bow to engage the roughened face of the thumb rest, whereby the thumb rest will be held rigid against swing- 5 ing movement.
6. In a flat iron, a body, a handle, a bow supporting the handle, a reversible thumb rest at the front end of the bow mounted to swing in an are independent of the handle and means for holding the thumb rest rigid with respect to the handle in any of a plurality of positions between two extreme positions.
