L Claim. (01. IQ-4.71)
The present invention relates, to. new and useful improvements in control handles for outboard motors embodying means for steering and controlling the speed of. the. motor from a position forwardly of the stern of the boat on which the motor is. mounted.
An important object of the invention is to provide an extensible control handle with means for easily and quickly attaching the same to the steering handle of the motor to steer the boat by a side to side swinging movement of the handle and providing a rotatable mounting for the handle with means connecting the same to the throttle of the engine to control the speed thereof by a rotary movement of the handle.
A further object of the invention is to provide an adjustable control handle of this character for use with motors of various types and makes.
Anotherobject is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efficient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, easy to install in position on the motor and which is otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view;
Figure 2 is an enlarged top plan view with parts broken away and shown in section;
Figure 3 is a front elevational view with the extensible handle shown in section;
Figure 4 is a group perspective view of the throttle connecting means for the handle;
Figure 5 is a similar view of the steering handle connecting means for the control handle;
Figure 6 is a perspective View of the crank arm forming the connection between the rotatable control handle and the throttle connection; and
Figure 7 is an enlarged perspective view of the hand grip for the control handle.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein, for the purpose of illustration, I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numerals 5 and 6 designate upper and lower clamping plates having opposed channels I and B for receiving the steering handle 9 of an outboard motor ID and which is clamped between plates 5 and 6 by bolts ll and wing nuts l2 at the corners of the plates.
A plate [3 projects laterally from upper plate 2 5 and to which a sleeve I4 is attached by means of a. laterally projecting plat-e: I51 overlying plate 13 and secured thereto by a bolt and nut It to connect the sleeve M to the clamps 5 and 6 in horizontal swingably adjusted position.
The. control handle I! is rotatably positioned in sleeve [4 and. secured in longitudinally adjusted position therein by means of cotter pins I8 selectively positioned in openings I9 in handle I! and positioned at each end of the sleeve I4 with washers 2 0 between the pins and the ends of the sleeves.
A hand grip 2| is secured to the front end of handle I! by means of a bolt and nut 22 and a hand bar 23 extends transversely at the front end of hand grip 2|.
The rear end of control handle I1 is formed with a squared reduced extension 24 positioned in a squared bore 25 of a collar 26 at one end of a crank arm 21 formed with an annular extension 28 having a row of openings 29 therein.
A throttle control rod 30 is formed with an angular end 3| selectively engaged in openings 29 and secured therein by a cotter pin 32 inserted in an opening 33 in the angular end portion 3|. The other end of rod 30 is threaded, as shown at 34, and on which an eye 35 is adjustably held by nuts 36 threaded on the rod at opposite sides of the eye. Eye 35 is formed at the upper end of a pin 3! loosely positioned in an opening 38 of a plate 39 and retained therein by a cotter pin Ml inserted in an opening 4| in the lower end of pin 31 under plate 39 to rockably and rotatably support the eye 35 above the plate.
Plate 39 is secured to the throttle lever control knob 42 of the motor by a bolt and nut or the like 43.
In the operation of the device, clamping plates 5 and B are secured to the steering handle 9 of the outboard motor and the control handle I! is attached to one side of clamping plates 5 and 6 by plates l3 and IS, the control handle being of suflicient length to extend forwardly a desired distance in a boat 44 on which the motor is mounted so that a person may occupy a seat 45 at the center of the boat and steer the boat by swinging the control handle I! from side to side in the usual manner.
The rear end of handle I1 is connected to the throttle lever knob 42 by crank arm 2! and rod 30 to control the speed of the motor by a rotary movement of control handle I! in sleeve l4.
Sleeve [4 may be adjusted on bolt 16 to incline the handle I! to bring the same within convenient reach of the person steering the boat in accordance with difierent types of motors.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, claimed as new is: v
A control handle for outboard motors comprising a pair of opposite plates clampingly engaging the steering handle of the motor, attaching means carried by the engine throttle, a sleeve pivoted on one of the clamping plates for swinging adjustment thereon, a rod rotatably mounted in the sleeve and having a hand grip at one end, means holding the rod from endwise movement in the sleeve to swing the steering handle from side to side by a similar movement of the rod, and
what is means connecting the other end of the rod to the attaching means to open and close the engine throttle by a rotary movement of the rod, said last-named means comprising a right angled crank arm fast on the rod and extending upwardly therefrom and across said steering handle, and a link connecting the crank arm to the attaching means.
