Abstract

239,964. Denton, W. L. July 0, 1924. Propelling, steering, and manoeuvring by reciprocating and vibrating plates.- Propelling and steering apparatus of the kind comprising a swinging frame having pivoted flaps and wherein adjustable stops provide for setting the flaps for forward or reverse running is characterized by means for varying the plane of action of the frame to provide a steering effect. The frame 5 and hand lever 3 are clamped to a bracket e pivotally supported at d on a swivel 1 carried on a bracket g clamped to the stern of the boat 2. The bracket is secured also by a hook-ended rod h with an intermediate tension nut j. The swivelling portion of the pin 1 preferably is supported on ball bearings on the fixed part. The pivoted flaps in the frame 5 are adapted to abut against stops 8, Fig. 5, on a sleeve 9 and normally held in position by springs 11. To change direction of propulsion, the stops are pulled along the guide 10 by a wire control 12 until opposite the opening 8<a> in the flaps, when the flap can swing over the stop which is then released on the opposite side. In place of the pivot pin, a universal joint mounting may be used. The apparatus may be mounted in pairs on the gunwales.
