UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE] nfinnoInnaY-noor cnmr.
Application filed January 2, 1828. Serial No. 78,932.
My invention relates to improvements in embroidery hoop clamps, and the object of m improvement is tovprovide a device of adiustable height adapted for clamping to a table and to embroidery hoops and the like.
I attain this object with the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying sheet of drawings which forms a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device clamped to a table, or the like, and having clamped in its upper end a pair of embroidery hoops with the work fastened therein shown in section on a medial vertical plane and partly broken away, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of Fig. 1 showing neither the fragmentary part of a table referred to nor the work, and from which the upper clamping nut is omitted to show parts hidden thereby, Fig. 3 1s a perspective view of the upper part of the standard, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the lower part of-the standard, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the upper clamp plate and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the lower clamp plate.
Similar characters refer to similar parts in the several views.
More particularly: The lower part 3 of the standard has its lower end bent backward to form the lower clamp member 4 in which is hole a for the clamping screw. A central longitudinal slot 5 extends nearly the length of the lower part of the standard 3. The lower clamp plate 6 has head 7 joined to one end by neck 8. This end is adapted for engagement with standard 3 in slot 5 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Clamping bolt 9 has a square shank engaged in square hole a in plate 6 and passes through hole (1* in lower clamp member 4 on which bears wing nut 10 when the standard is clamped to A, see Fig. 1, or any other suitable supporting structure.- Preferably the contiguous surfaces of 4 and plate 6 are faced with pads of felt as .at 11, 11.
In the upper part of standard member 12 is a bend causing the upper end 16 thereof to lean forward to form a member of the upper clamp. .Below 16 is a central longitudinal slot a and protruding forward from the lower end of 12 is central boss 13. When the two parts 3 and 12 of the standard are m operative position boss 13 engages in slot 5 which registers with slot at and the two parts of the standard are made operatively one by clam bolt and wing nut 1.4 and 15 through sai slots. When parts 3 and 12 are thus joined the standard may be shortened or lengthened by sliding the parts on each other and retaining in the desired place by ti'ghtenin nut 15. The presence of boss 13 in slot 5 hmits the relative movements of parts 3 and 12 to reciprocation.
In the upper end 16 is clamp bolt hole a" and boss hole 6 Boss 19 on the lower end of the bent-over end of clamp plate 17 is engageable in hole 6 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Also in plate 17 is square bolt hole a" and when boss 19 is engaged in hole I) holes a" and a register and through them is placed clampbolt 20 with wing nut 21 preferably bearing on 16. When a pair of hoops B, B are placed between jaws 16 and 17, as shown in Fig. 1, the tightening of nut 21 will clamp them therebetween and hold the work. The slight forward inclination of the upper end 16 of the standard is intended to bring the plane of the hoops B, B at a convenient angle for the operative, while the adjustment between parts 3 andi12 is intended to be used to bring the upper clamp at the desired height in front of said operative. The upper ends of 16 and clamp plate 17 are curved to conform to hoops B, B.
The simplicity and cheapness of this clamp commend it for a variety of uses other than that to which this specification has been con fined, and for these other uses slight changes in structure only are required to make it well adapted all of which are well within the scope of this invention and I desire to have it so understood.
Having thus disclosed my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,-
In an embroidery hoop clamp in combination, a standard composed of lower and upper parts having registering longitudinal slots therein, a bosson the lower end of said upper standard part engageable in the slot in said lower standard part, a clamping jaw havin a boss on its lower end engagebolt in said slots, a fixed jaw on the lower able in a ole in said ugperflxed jaw and end of said lower standard .part, a loose jaw a: clamping bolt throug both of said up- 10 engaged with said slot in said lower standard per jaws, said upper jaws having arcuate 8 art, a clamping bolt through both of said upper ends.
ower jaws, an inclined fixed jaw on the up- 4 per end of said upper standard part, a loose CLARENCE D. BALDWIN.
